After about seven years of fund-raising and construction, Terra Alta now has a year-long program of performances and events, as well as artist residencies (reopening in 2022) that host artists from across the African continent and internationally.

Sutherland is one of several Ghanaian contemporary artists—painter Amoako Boafo, installation artist Ibrahim Mahama, and performance artist Va-Bene Elikem Fiatsi—

*who, in the absence of government support or much private funding, are taking matters into their own hands* 💯

by setting up spaces throughout the country to support and mentor the next generation.

Artists are plowing proceeds back into supporting their peers at home with studios, residencies, and noncommercial exhibition spaces.

Have you heard about the Roberta Annan €100M Impact Fund for African Creatives?
It's a known fact that Africa has a burgeoning fashion and creative scene. However, as it is the case in most other sectors, inadequate access to finance has been a major hinderance to growth.
*Ghanaian businesswoman*,
Roberta Annan, knows this all too well. And this is why she has decided to step in and help.
Last week while attending the Paris fashion week, Annan launched a €100 million Impact Fund for African Creatives (IFFAC). Business Insider Africa understands that the sum of €50,000 each will be given to selected fashion entrepreneurs in the form of grants.

Megan Gabrielle Harris is a multi-disciplinary artist from Sacramento, California. Her work is mostly comprised of drawings, paintings and photography. M.G.H.’s desire to paint began at an early age, ignited by her father Thomas Harris whose paintings covered every wall in their home and continues to be heavily influenced by her father’s work and his Escapism style.

The inspiration for her work comes from fashion photography, surreal landscapes and natural forms, stemming from her experiences working as a model for over ten years. Women of color are the primary focus in her work. She uses vibrant and rich color palettes in an attempt to create a light and airy atmosphere for her subjects, while depicting these female figures as independent and powerful which is the perception she has of the women in her community.

(...) Tojin Ojih Odutola is best known for her multimedia drawings and works on paper, which explore the malleability of identity and the possibilities in visual story-telling. Interested in the topography of skin, Ojih Odutola has a distinctive style of mark-making using only basic drawing materials, such as ballpoint pens, pencils, pastels and charcoal. This signature technique involves building up of layers on the page, through blending and shading with the highest level of detail, creating compositions that reinvent and reinterpret the traditions of portraiture. Ojih Odutola credits the development of her style from using pen, which holds a special significance through its function as a writing tool, as her work is also akin to fiction. She often spends months crafting narratives that unfold through series of artworks like the chapters of a book.

Her work is inspired by both art history and popular culture, as well as her own personal history—being born in Nigeria then moving as a child to America where she was raised in conservative Alabama. The idea of traveling or transporting the self is a recurring theme in her work and, for Ojih Odutola, the construction of her figures is a means of discovering an individual’s character and personal story. Though the representation of skin has been a core focus of her practice, she has also explored depictions of landscapes, architecture and domestic interiors in more recent series (...)

Their spirit and motivations to capture the real and authentic Ghanaian lives inspire today’s generation of photographers and filmmakers to connect the world to the culture and history of their people. In honour of Ghana’s photographic scene, 64 years after "independence", here are some of the country’s best young photographers, who like their predecessors, draw inspiration from the culture and natural aesthetics of their homeland.
