The logo wasn’t the problem. Here’s what actually was…

A new location and new clinic was the perfect time for Yates Physiotherapy to review their brand. Their brand wasn’t broken, it felt like it needed a little lift, but they weren’t sure exactly what that looked like.

Through the Brand Audit we found that Yates Physiotherapy Adelaide didn’t need a rebrand. There were elements of their brand that were working well, and they had brand equity that was real. The audit process revealed a specific visual gap. Their typography hadn’t matured alongside their business and the colour palette, whilst leaning in the right direction needed to reflect the quality and experience of the business.

The fix? A brand refresh, just in time for the launch of their new location and website. We refined the icon and opened up the typography so that it was less crowded and more premium. The colour shifted to a softer more contemporary palette with navy anchoring the brand, communicating trust and expertise.
Often, business owners know that something isn’t quite right, but they can rarely see the gap from the inside. A Brand Audit helps you gain an outside perspective to see where your opportunities to stand out really are.

Canva got you started. Here’s when it starts holding you back.

We’ve all been there. You were starting out, you had a logo, and you just needed a flyer or a social post to start promoting yourself. Canva was the obvious solution. It’s cheap, editable and affordable. You find a template that looks pretty and you’re on your way.

Without a well-designed branding system, your growing team reaches for different Canva templates to suit each project. This works great for a while. But over time, your feed becomes bitsy. Different colours. Different styles. There’s little consistency between your printed material and your social posts. And the designs are same same, with others using Canva. By defaulting to free templates you’re creating a brand that is not distinctive or memorable. This is where your business starts to lose credibility, trust and growth.

Let me tell you about Pinkie from AI Meets Girlboss. She reports going from 64 to 200 subscribers in two weeks simply after rebranding around a repeatable visual system. She says “I replaced one-off visuals with a repeatable visual system... same character, same palette, same compositional logic, same visual grammar across posts.” She explains, “Visuals aren’t decoration. They’re the door. And if your door looks like everyone else’s, people keep walking.”

For Pinkie it was constraint – not creativity – that unlocked growth. This is where a clear brand strategy and guidelines can save the day. When used by everyone in your team, they not only ensure your visuals match, but that your style and messaging appeal to your audience and are in line with your values. Of course you can still use Canva, but with professionally designed brand templates, your team will stay on brand – without the guesswork.

The Marq State of Brand Consistency report found that 68% of businesses report that brand consistency has contributed to between 10% and 20% of their revenue growth.

If your brand's outgrown your templates, let's talk about a system built around how you actually work.

This wine label went on to win a national design award. It started with a logo that felt dated.

When I first met Scott and Rebecca in 2014, they had inherited a brand that was dated and wanted to modernise the design without losing its essence. They wanted a brand they could be proud of and own as they built their boutique winery, and I was excited by the challenge.

In 2021 we updated the brand to include a colour palette that better reflected the ambience of their designs, and by 2023 the Fernfield Wines Brand had matured and excelled. Winning a Packwine Design Award in 2023 for Classic Format Package Design for their Wayward Girl label, their brand had become an award winner. That same year, three of their wines were finalists in three Packwine Award categories with their Gold Leaf Reserve Shiraz featured in Grapegrower & Winemaker Magazine.

And it all started with a simple logo refresh.

**What actually happens after you sign off on a brand identity?**

When you work with me, I don’t just hand over a logo and then disappear. I provide you with a branding system and assets to help you rollout your new brand consistently.

With a detailed style guide that includes your brand foundations and how to use your logos you’ll save time and money getting your designs right. According to Ramona Sukhraj from HubSpot “Clear rules reduce revisions, prevent inconsistencies, and help agencies or freelancers get it right on the first try.”

That’s important because according to the Canva Brand Consistency Guide “89% of marketers agree, consistency earns customer loyalty”, and “68% of companies report consistency increased revenue growth 10–20%”. Implementing your brand consistently doesn’t just look good, it’s great for business.

To help ensure your rollout is consistent, our branding packages include:

- Style guidelines
- Quick reference style sheet
- Logo suite including all the file types you’ll need
- Design elements or patterns
- Touch point designs such as business cards, letterheads and email signatures to get you started.
- 3 months of discounted design support.

Once the package has been delivered, our design support will help you maintain consistency into the future, so your team never has to guess.

**Just because a brand is calm doesn’t mean it’s boring. Here’s why.**

People often think that for a brand to be interesting it needs to be bold and exciting, pushing the edges. But that’s not always the case. If your brand is minimal because you can’t think of anything better, then yes, that’s boring. But if your brand is calm and minimal with thought and intention, it still has a story to tell which is never boring.

Let me explain. The key is your audience. For some audiences, bold, energetic creative chaos might be just the thing that floats their boat, and if that’s your brand, lean into the fun of it. But if after strategy you realise that your customers are actually looking for a calm, reliable and considered service, a high energy design may be very off putting for them and make them less likely to trust you.

When I was working on my own rebrand, I noticed that my competitors in Adelaide were bold, dark, strong, hard-edged and punchy in their style. And that is fine for them. I actually really liked what they were doing, but when I examined my audience I discovered that was not what they were looking for. That’s why I chose a calm, more minimal design approach. Being clear about your audience will help your brand appeal directly to them.

You might love that quirky fun style that you see other designers creating. But bold branding for the sake of it is just noise. Calm branding done with intention is a strategic choice, not an absence of ideas.

“If your work looks minimal because every element is doing exactly what it needs to, great. If it looks minimal because you ran out of ideas and stopped, that’s a different thing entirely.” – Tom May, Creative Boom, 21 April 2026

If loud branding has never felt like you, but you’re not sure what does, a Brand Audit can help find out. www.splitpants.com.au/brand-audit/

A good logo does more than just look nice. It's an idea made visual.

People often assume that a branding system is a logo, colours and font pairing, but it is actually much more than that. It’s the embodiment of your business’s values and ideas with rationale to every mark.

Good Thinking Hypnotherapy supports clients navigating chronic pain through tailored and research-informed therapeutic methods. The goal wasn’t just a “nice logo”. It was to create a clear, consistent brand that communicated trust, empathy, and a grounded, modern approach, without feeling too clinical or wellness-y.

The thought bubble shaped icon, with concentric deepening circles, reflects the Eriksonian approach used by Good Thinking Hypnotherapy. The use of the golden ratio to shape the icon, brings a sense of balance and quiet harmony. Around the central circle (the client) are three supporting circles representing key therapeutic tools: indirect suggestion, metaphor, and storytelling, techniques used to gently influence behaviour and create change. The colours were chosen to give a sense of calm reassurance, anchored by a safe and trustworthy deep green.

The logo doesn’t just have to convey values, it must also work in the real world, on business cards, letterheads, emails and marketing material, so that the brand message is felt wherever the customer finds it, in print or online.

Need a branding system that enables you to present your brand consistently? A branding package might be just what you need.

Every branding project starts with the same question — and it's not 'what colours do you like?’

When I rebranded Splitpants, I didn’t start with colours and fonts; I’d already been playing with them, which was a telltale sign I needed to fix something. I started by asking myself ‘Who am I?’ ‘What do I do?’ ‘Why do I do it?’ ‘Who do I do it for?’ and ‘Who else is doing it?’ These questions revealed my brand foundations and why my brand felt off. My brand didn’t reflect the values or level of service I wanted to offer. The rigid and dated design didn’t feel warm and friendly like me. The process gave me clarity to rebrand confidently.

It’s like a health check; skipping the diagnosis risks prescribing the wrong treatment. If we don’t work out what the problem is, we can’t fix it. Jumping straight into redesigning your logo risks repeating the same mistakes.

Redesign with clarity. Start with a Brand Audit.

Tweaked your logo more than once in the last few years? Your strategy is the problem.

You cringe when someone asks you to send your website link. You’ve updated your brand colours a few times, but you’re still not in love with them. And your logo feels a little off, but you can’t quite put your finger on it. Believe me, I know the feeling.

If you’re experiencing these key signs, your branding needs a strategic update:

1. You hesitate when someone asks you to send your website link.
2. You’re constantly tweaking the colours, or how you use your logo.
3. You find yourself having to explain your services all the time.
4. You don’t feel like your business looks as professional as the service you offer.
5. Your visuals feel inconsistent, and outdated.

Most business owners think the problem is their logo. They begin tweaking it and fiddling with design and layout. The truth is the logo isn’t the problem; it is the symptom. The most likely problem is that you’ve outgrown your branding. You probably started with a DIY logo, mainly focused on aesthetics, but you hadn’t thought strategically about your brand: how it should look to speak to your audience and stand out from your competitors. The problem isn’t the logo, but the lack of strategy and a branding system.

I know, because that is exactly what happened with Splitpants. My logo no longer reflected the quality and experience of my business. So, I took my own advice and put my own business through the brand strategy process. The result was a brand that is aligned with my experience, values and audience. Now I can share my brand confidently.

The brand wasn't designed for the patient. It was designed for the person holding the phone.

During our strategy stage for SASHC’s branding package, competitor analysis revealed that other clinics in Adelaide were designing for the patient. However, SASHC’s decision makers are Gen X adults with ageing parents and young children who research providers and choose based on trust.

SASHC’s brand needed to speak to the person holding the phone, not the 6 year old in the waiting room. This insight shaped everything from the calm grounded colour palette to the confident wordmark and continuous line that formed the icon. Understanding your key audience can lead your design in a completely different direction and help you stand out from your competitors. The resulting SASHC brand is warm, confident and professional, appealing to the decision makers rather than the young patient.
