I don’t routinely recommend lactation cookies, teas or supplements to breastfeeding mothers, because there isn’t strong evidence that lactation cookies or their common ingredients reliably increase milk supply.
But… that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy them!
Yesterday I got to share some of this amazing slice with a client of mine (amazing twin mumma) at the end of her appointment & I immediately had to ask for the recipe. 👌
Breastfeeding is incredibly energy-demanding, and having easy, nourishing and delicious snacks within reach can make those long feeding days (and nights!) a little easier.
Breastfeeding increases a mother’s energy requirements — generally by around 330–500 extra calories per day, depending on the stage of lactation and individual circumstances. So rather than focusing on finding a “magic” food to boost supply, focus on eating enough, eating regularly, staying hydrated to thirst, and choosing foods that help you feel nourished and satisfied.
This dark chocolate & cranberry slice contains oats, flaxseed meal and brewer’s yeast — ingredients commonly included in lactation recipes. While we can’t promise they’ll increase your milk supply, the slice makes a pretty delicious breastfeeding snack regardless.
Give the recipe a go — or, even better, send it to someone who keeps asking, “Is there anything I can do to help?” and ask them to make you a batch.
If you’re worried about your milk supply, lactation cookies aren’t a substitute for working out why your supply may be low. An individual breastfeeding and milk-supply assessment with an experienced IBCLC can help identify what’s actually going on.
Enjoy! đź©·
