Quick check-in: when was your complete towing setup last weighed in travel-ready condition?

There is no lecture attached to this one. We are curious how often caravanners revisit their weights after adding accessories, changing vehicles or altering the way they travel.

Most setups do not become heavy because of one enormous item. Payload usually disappears a little at a time.

A second battery. Another gas bottle. Extra water. A toolbox. Camp chairs. Food. Clothes. A barbecue. A few "just in case" items.

Individually, they may not feel like much. Together, they can add hundreds of kilograms across the tow vehicle and caravan.

One useful exercise is to empty a storage area and weigh the contents in groups before putting back only what you genuinely use.

MYTH: "My vehicle is rated to tow 3.5 tonnes, so any caravan under 3.5 tonnes is fine."

FACT: Braked towing capacity is only one part of the picture.

You also need to consider the tow vehicle's GVM and axle limits, GCM, tow-ball limit, the caravan's ATM and GTM, its axle limits and the way the complete setup is loaded.

Two caravans with the same total weight can place very different demands on the tow vehicle depending on tow-ball mass and load distribution.

Towing capacity is important - but it is not a complete towing assessment on its own.

Being under the overall GVM or ATM does not automatically mean every individual limit is fine.

Axle limits matter because they tell us how much load is being carried in specific parts of the setup. A tow vehicle can be within its total mass but still have a heavily loaded rear axle. A caravan can also carry more weight on one side than the other.

That is why detailed weighing is useful. It shows where the load is sitting, not just the grand total.

Sometimes the answer is not to remove a huge amount of gear. It may be a matter of moving suitable items to achieve a better distribution - while still checking every relevant limit.

Five quick checks before you tow:

1. Tyres - condition, pressure, age and load rating.
2. Coupling - correctly connected and secured.
3. Safety gear - chains, breakaway cable and electrical plug.
4. Lights - indicators, brakes and running lights working.
5. Load - cupboards secured and heavy items placed thoughtfully.

Then do one slow walk around the complete setup before pulling away. It takes only a couple of minutes and can catch the simple things we all miss when departure morning gets busy.

GCM stands for Gross Combination Mass.

In simple terms, it is the maximum permitted combined mass of the loaded tow vehicle and loaded trailer together, as specified for the vehicle.

Why does it catch people out? Because a vehicle may have a generous advertised towing capacity, but that does not always mean you can load the vehicle to its maximum and tow the maximum trailer weight at the same time.

Passengers, accessories, luggage, fuel and everything in the caravan all contribute to the real combination mass.

The brochure numbers are the starting point. Your loaded, travel-ready setup is the number that matters.
