The hardest question to answer in most businesses is also the most important one:

Which marketing is actually working?

The reason it’s so hard isn’t complicated. Most owners don’t track anything. They run ads, they have a website, they’re on Google Maps, and they genuinely couldn’t tell you which one brings in the most leads or what each one costs them.

That’s spending money with your eyes closed.

If you want to know what’s working, you have to make it measurable. Different phone numbers for different parts of the business.

One on the vans, one on the site, one per campaign. Separate lead forms for every source. A system that captures every call and every enquiry in one place.

Then it’s just math. Leads from each source, divided by spend on each source. That number tells you everything.

You’ll find some channels are carrying the business and others are quietly bleeding you dry. But you’ll never know which is which until you track it.

Guessing is expensive. Tracking is cheap. Choose accordingly.

The fastest way to kill your own growth? Turn your ads off when you get busy.

Every trades business does it. Leads are flowing, jobs are closing, you’re slammed. So you switch the ads off to catch up.

Then you finish your pipeline, turn them back on, and realise the momentum’s gone. It doesn’t come straight back. You have to rebuild it from scratch.

We lived this two years ago. On, off, on, off. Busy, then desperate, then busy again. Our growth flatlined for months because of that exact cycle.
Lesson learned: when things are going well, keep the ads running.

Cut the budget if you need to. But never turn them off.

Because ads do more than bring leads.

They build demand. Some people see you for six months before they ever call. Stay visible and you’re the first name they think of when they’re ready to spend.

Busy is exactly when you should keep advertising. Not when you should stop.

Running ads for a trades business is completely different to running ads in any other industry. And most agencies have no idea.

With e-commerce, someone sees the ad, builds trust in their head, and buys on the spot. Done.

Trades doesn’t work like that.

Your ad isn’t there to close a job. It’s there to get one inquiry. That’s it. From that inquiry, you need an entire sales process to turn it into actual work.

No ad will ever close a $20K, $30K, $50K job for you. That happens in the conversation after the click. The ad just opens the door.

This is where most agencies fail. They think you run a couple of ads and money walks in. With trades, you have to work the leads. You have to understand the homeowner, their pain points, what actually makes them trust you over the five other quotes they’re getting.

I know this because I was a plumber. I sat across from homeowners and sold them on the job. That’s not something most marketers will ever understand.

Marketing alone will never scale a trades business. You need the right message to get them in the door, and the right process to close them once they’re there.

That’s the difference. And it’s why most agencies get it wrong.

Your business will take everything you give it. Including your health, if you let it.

When I was a plumber I hit 105 kilos. Physical work all day, gym on the side, and still overweight. Because I was eating like someone who was too busy to care.

Maccas, bakery pies, endless coffees, job after job after job.

I was on track for diabetes and I barely noticed, because I was too busy “working hard.”

Getting off the tools forced me to slow down and actually look at what I was doing to my body. Since then I’ve gone from 105 to 80 and I’m still dropping.

Here’s the message for every business owner watching:

You are not too busy. You have the time. You’re just spending it all on the business and none of it on yourself.

Block it out. Train on set days. Prep your meals on a Sunday if that’s what it takes. Treat your health like the most important client you have. Because it is.

The business is pointless if you’re not around to enjoy what it builds.

I run an agency that services clients all over the world.

Most of it happens through a screen. Calls, messages, dashboards, reports. And that’s the beauty of it. I built this thing so it could run from anywhere, serve anyone, and not be tied to a single postcode.

But every now and then I get to do something that no screen can replicate.

I get to fly over, sit down across the table from a client, and actually talk. Not just business. Life. Family. Where they came from. What they’re building.

What keeps them up at night and what they’re chasing.
And every single time, it hits me how rare this is.

A few years ago I was a plumber. Comfortable, predictable, going nowhere I actually wanted to go. The idea that I’d one day be flying to meet business owners around the world, helping them grow what they’ve spent their lives building, would have sounded insane.

Now it’s just a Tuesday.

I don’t take it for granted. The freedom to structure my life this way, to choose who I work with, to show up in person when it matters and run everything remotely when it doesn’t, is the entire reason I took the risk in the first place.

This is what it was all for. Not just the money. The life around it.
Grateful doesn’t quite cover it. But it’s the closest word I’ve got.
