🤩 I've been speaking with tradies this week about their experiences engaging with government tenders and where they felt the biggest challenges were in gaining access to these contracts.

These conversations are helping me build Inprisma into a business that is well-positioned to deliver help and support exactly where it is needed most 😎.

Right now, there are two key resources available via Inprisma's website, that have been built upon an analysis of the common themes and evaluation criteria across each of Queensland's Local Council procurement policies and practices.

✨ These resources include:

🛠️ A capability statement checklist - that can help guide you in knowing what information to include and prioritise.

🛠️ A Tender-Readiness Scorecard - that will give you a sense of what you need and how well positioned you are to secure the work you're looking for.

As I continue to talk with industry experts and the small businesses who are deeply involved in the tendering process, the more resources Inprisma will produce, to help operators tackle their biggest challenges.

If there's anything that Inprisma can do to help you and your business reach that next level, or even if you'd just like to have a chat about where you're hurting most, then please reach out to us. We always love hearing from you 😊.

🤔“Local benefit” can be worth 20–30% of a council tender score and a lot of SMEs either miss it or treat it too vaguely.

Among other things, councils are also looking for practical, measurable outcomes for the local area, such as jobs, local spend and genuine local capacity to deliver.

📰In a new Inprisma article, I break down:

✅ What councils typically mean by local benefit / local content / local preference
✅ The three ways it’s assessed (scored weighting, price preference, or mandatory plans/schedules)
✅ The catch: many councils flip the mechanism depending on contract value
✅ What evidence actually scores (and what doesn’t)

👉If you take one thing away, it's that generic lines like “We support locals” just doesn't cut the mustard. Evidence does.

The article also includes a practical approach for building a reusable Local Benefit Evidence Pack (so you’re not reinventing the wheel on every tender).

🤔Many tenders for local council work packages get knocked out on compliance criteria, before anyone even reads the full submission.

If you’ve ever priced properly, wrote a solid response, attached photos/referees… and still got excluded early, it could be because you failed Gate 1 (pass/fail) — not because you weren’t competitive.

📰In the new article on the Inprisma site, I break down the two competitions happening inside every council tender:

✅ Gate 1: Hurdle / compliance (pass or fail)
✅ Gate 2: Evaluation (scored + weighted)

And the repeat patterns that trigger early exclusions, including:

🛠 Late or wrong lodgement method (portals are unforgiving)

🛠 Missing mandatory returnables/schedules (the silent killer)

🛠 Unsigned forms / wrong signatory

🛠 Mandatory briefings/site inspections missed

🛠 Unacknowledged addenda (requirements shift mid-tender)

🛠 Licences/insurances expired or under threshold

🛠 Format rules (page limits, file types, naming conventions)

Takeaway: if you don’t clear Gate 1, you never enter the race, no matter how good your price or experience is. However, once you do clear Gate 1, there are a few high-impact elements many SMEs miss that can materially lift your Gate 2 score.

🎸On Wednesday night I did exactly that, heading out with my dad to see Metallica live at Suncorp Stadium… and it absolutely WENT OFF!! 🤘🔥🤘🔥

👉Mental health and burnout are becoming serious issues for SMEs as the landscape gets more complex and the admin load keeps growing. It’s easy to feel like you can’t afford to take a break – but that’s exactly when you probably need one most.

Whether you’re running a small business or working inside a larger organisation, it’s crucial to have moments where you reset – family time, music, sport, hobbies, whatever works for you. It’s one of the great things about working and doing business in Australia: we should be able to enjoy both the work we do and the time we spend with the people we care about.

⚡️🤩😎🤘🔥⚡️🎸Huge night. Can’t wait to see Metallica again – and I hope everyone catching them around the country gets to recharge and “ride the lightning”. ⚡🔥🤘😎🤩⚡️

🔥The QLD 2026 Procurement Policy has been released🔥

Now begins my deep dive 🏊‍♂️ into the new policies to see where the differences are and what it actually means for SMEs.

👀A brief glance suggests that From 1 January 2026, QPP 2026 will:

Reaffirm the 30% SME target – at least 30% of procurement by value is intended to go to small and medium suppliers.

Allow direct awards up to $500k for goods and services, which is huge if you’re already known and trusted.

Push continues on sustainability, innovation and Indigenous participation as part of “value for money”.

🤔That all sounds great… but it doesn’t automatically level the playing field.

❓If you’re an SME, the real questions are:

Where does your business naturally line up with these priorities (local, innovative, sustainable, Indigenous, social value, etc.)?

What evidence do you have on paper – policies, track record, certifications, case studies – to show in a bid?

Which categories and contract sizes (up to that $500k direct award space) are your best fit?

🛠️What needs fixing now (website, capability statement, WHS documentation, insurances, social value story) so you’re visible and “procurement ready” before 2026 hits?

⚡️If you’d like a head start, I’m happy to take a quick look at your current capability statement/website and suggest how to better align it with the new policy settings. Just drop me an email.

🔥On Wednesday I had the privilege of attending a workshop that was all about winning tenders.🔥

It was my hope that I would walk away with a wealth of information that will help me improve the value of Inprisma's services for our clients. It proved to be an exceptional experience! 🤩

🤯A few things that hit me:

For every $1 spent with an SME, 44¢ stays in the local community. With big players, it’s closer to 1¢ in the dollar.

Around 30% of government contracts are slated for SMEs, and QLD alone has roughly a $35 billion state government opportunity pipeline.

Treasury is forecasting around $180 billion in public procurement over the coming years – think of it as a “procurement Olympics” in the lead-up to Brisbane 2032.

🏋The Olympics example was wild:

Roughly 850 tenders, 5,000 suppliers and 180,000+ workers.
Some jobs are so big that no single business can do it all, so co-operative bids and partnerships are critical and improve chances of success.

💥A few myths got smashed too:

Average state government contract is around $20k – you don’t need to be a giant to play.

The idea that “government will never need our services” is just wrong – in fact, almost ANY service has an opportunity to secure contracts with government.

Only about 15% of opportunities even show up on QTenders or VendorPanel – panel arrangements and 'Business as Usual' work quietly soak up the rest.

🦵And the kicker:

60% of tenders don’t conform to basic requirements. If it says “300 words or less” and you write 320, you’re non-conforming.

Your website and documentation are massive assets – and being on the right QLD panels (and using them properly) makes it far easier for government and Tier-1s to buy from you.

All of this is exactly where I’m focusing Inprisma – helping trade and service-based SMEs get tender-ready, show up on panels the right way and avoid the simple mistakes that knock them out before they’re even scored.

If you’re curious whether your business is actually ready for this “procurement Olympics”, I’m happy to take a look at your current docs or website and point out a few practical fixes, free of charge.
