We said we’d followed the light, and perhaps, improbably, it led us here. People warned us about the weather… the rain, the grey. We saw very little of either. For us, it was simply August. Long light, low sun, and a whole country turned gold.
The English landscape is not a place…. so much as an idea, and a fairly recent one at that. Before the eighteenth century, nobody thought a hill was particularly worth looking at. Then the painters arrived… the poets and within two generations an entire country had been taught to admire itself… to see itself as scenery, subject and composition.
England is a nation that has been composed patiently over time and by people who mostly never even considered themselves artists.
