It was assumed that tomatoes were brought to Europe by Columbus in 1493 through Western India. Tomatoes were first cultivated in Europe in the 50-60s of the 16th century. At the end of the 16th century, tomatoes were called "apples of love" in France, England, Belgium, Germany, Italy, Spain, and Portugal.
