I often worry about the next generation of designers.

These days there are so many new tools to go faster in your design software, and don’t get me wrong, I’m all for speeding up those laborious tasks.

But sometimes these new tools, like ‘Remove Background’ don’t work like they’re supposed to. And you might need to revert to the old ways to get the result you need.

Doing something as simple as removing a background was one of the ways I got better as a designer. It taught me to use the pen tool, which made me a master of manipulating vectors later in my career.

I was discussing this yesterday with Vanessa Rivera over on the Designerrrs™ Community, powered by Adobe Express and we both came to the conclusion that designers should definitely strive to learn how to do tasks like background removal, photo retouching, grading and lighting using techniques that don’t use AI or a machine-learning model to help them. Not only will it give you a sense of accomplishment, but it could help you out in a pinch.

[Based on a true story] Have you tried the brand noun process?

Once upon a time I did 5 completely unique options for a logo project, only to have them all rejected. Long time followers will recognise this ‘Electric E’ logo as one of those versions.

I would design full-blown versions of logo marks (mockups and all) using concepts that I was hoping and praying that the client would go along with. I missed the mark on all of them, and me and that client eventually parted ways.

It was brutal.

I ended up re-writing my process, and introduced the Brand Noun Process from Allan Peters (see his book ‘Logos That Last’).

It completely revolutionised my client interactions and changed the way I work, with more projects being signed off on the first go, or at least with minimal revisions.

P.S. Full story, I ended up giving that logo away to a local electrician and she now uses it as part of her branding! 😍

P.P.S. If you’re wondering if this is a repost.. yes it is! I’m on a much-needed holiday with my family right now.

🧐 Did you know there’s a formula to work out rounded corners on an offset stroke?

Inner Corner + Padding = Outer Corner

E.g. 10px inner corner radius + 20px padding = 30px outer corner radius.

You don’t need it in Adobe Illustrator though…

1. Bring up your appearance panel
2. Duplicate your inner stroke
3. Effects - Path - Offset Path
4. Offset by your original padding (e.g. 20px
5. Now round your corner and it’ll follow suit!
