We are returning for the fourth year to showcase all the amazing brands at the Good Food & W**e Show in Brisbane. Kat creates her magic at the show in real time and it gives exhibitors a chance to ask questions and see how we can elevate their brand.

Sometimes showing less makes you want to see more.

I deliberately let these little gulab jamun from wander out of the frame, leaving plenty of space around them to breathe.

Your brain knows there’s more on that plate. You don’t need me to show you everything.

That negative space also gives the image another purpose... somewhere for a designer to add a headline, menu item or message without competing with the food.

Sometimes the space you leave is just as important as what you put in it.

For me, part of the joy of Indian food is the abundance... dishes in the middle of the table, everyone sharing, passing plates around and inevitably going back for just one more taste.

And all those colours, textures and spices make it pretty fabulous to photograph too.

It’s all in the details...

My recent session at wasn’t just about photographing the food.

Jasvinder and Preet have put so many personal touches into their restaurant... the rich colours, textures, fabrics, lighting and little details you might not consciously notice when you walk through the door.

But together, they create the feeling of the place.

My job is to notice them... and to understand the stories behind them.

Because good restaurant photography should give you a sense of the experience before you even step foot inside.

Sometimes it’s what surrounds the subject that makes the image.

Framing is such a simple but powerful tool in photography.

Notice the two green edges framing this scene, contrasting against those beautiful burnt orange tones. Then the pools of light naturally draw your eye down... straight towards a table waiting for someone to sit at it.

But for me, this image becomes about more than composition.

How many conversations happen around a table like this? How many stories are told, dishes passed around, laughs shared and memories made over a meal?

An empty table is really just waiting for its next story. ✨

The naan always gets me...

I’m not really meant to eat a lot of bread, but put warm naan in front of me and my willpower seems to disappear. 😂

Even when we cook Indian from scratch at home, we’ll often buy traditional naan to go with it. There’s just something about the way it cooks in the tandoor... those charred little bubbles, crispy edges and soft centre ready to mop up every last bit of curry.

And photographing this at certainly wasn’t helping!

So which camp are you in... naan lover or pappadum addict?

There’s something about an empty plate...

Two empty plates, waiting to be filled with an array of traditional Indian delights.

Sometimes in food photography, it’s not about filling every inch of the frame. Leaving a little space creates anticipation... a sense of what’s about to come.

And with those rich reds, charred edges and spices right there in front of you, I think your tastebuds already know what they want next. 😋

Sometimes the story is in what’s not there yet.
