8 Signs You’re NOT Getting the Recognition you Deserve at Work.
For a lot of us out there, work can be challenging enough, but enduring it day in and day out without feeling recognized or appreciated can make it even more demanding and demeaning. And these regular, constant dissatisfied feelings, can lead to low self-esteem, increased feelings of worthlessness and a reluctance to engage fully.
Erica, a 33-year-old mother of three, who, despite her stable family life and commitments, faced persistent issues with her boss that never seemed to get resolved. She felt like a nobody who was always at the bottom of the ladder, regardless of the dedication she demonstrated. Erica knew she had to change something but couldn't quite figure out what that magic thing was. Despite this though, she liked a lot of things about her job, its location, the great family-friendly hours, the parking and even the pay. She’d like to stay, but things had to change. Was she kidding herself about what was going wrong? Maybe it was just in her head.
An objective assessment of her situation soon showed her that she was not imagining things. There were definitely signs that that she was being ignored and overlooked. This is what the signs looked like and maybe they apply to you too:
1. Unequal Pay Rates: She was doing the same work as others in the group but because of the pandemic and other ‘reasons’, her rate was lower. She felt undervalued and demotivated. The pandemic had been over for quite some time and she knew she could and should formulate a written request for equity.
2. Lack of Credit for Your Ideas or Work: While Erica always left earlier than some of the others – there was no-one else to pick up the kids – she compensated for it by coming in earlier. It was an arrangement she had worked out with her boss during her initial job interview. This meant that many innovative ideas or adjustments or client wins she had, were unseen by others. She felt as though she were constantly in the shadows. Writing up a log of her achievements and successes was something she felt sure she should do.
3. Feeling Ignored or Dismissed: And if no-one else can see your wins, you can be sure you’re not going to be considered as the go-to person in your department, she thought. She had to be taken seriously. She just had to.
4. Loss of Passion: When you no longer care about your work due to a lack of recognition, it can lead to a decline in motivation and job satisfaction. It can mean too that you don’t put in the effort required. This then reinforces what others may be thinking.
5. Being Overlooked for Promotions: If promotions seem to pass you by, and you're the last one considered, it's a clear sign of unacknowledged potential.
6. Constant Interruptions and Second-Guessing: Frequent interruptions or second-guessing at meetings can erode your confidence and make you question your abilities. When they often ‘talk over’ you, it’s bad.
7. Lack of Trust in Decision-Making: Feeling untrusted to make informed decisions based on your skills and experience can be demoralizing.
8. Unequal Opportunities: When you're not offered the same opportunities as your co-workers, it can hinder your professional growth.
It's true that those with the right skills and qualifications often have an advantage in the workplace. They tend to receive better opportunities, higher pay packages, improved conditions, and more perks. Their recognition becomes a benchmark for success.
