My lockdown survival guide…
We're in lockdown number six in Melbourne. For those of you who are new to this or need some fresh inspiration, I thought I'd share the things that have helped me survive lockdowns.

🌷Exercise and fresh air - don't underestimate the difference this makes! I aim to get out for a walk at least once a day, even if it's only for a lap of the block.
🌷 Keep routines and look after yourself. Pyjama days sound like a fun idea, but not back-to-back. Try to keep getting up at a regular time and dress in outfits that bring you joy.
🌷 Connect with friends. I know we all get sick of zoom meetings, but calling or video calling our friends during lockdown can lift your spirits.
🌷 Monitor your news intake. I usually pick one source I trust for my news (thanks ABC News) and check that once a day.
🌷 Have your daily dose of self-care - indulging in something that fills your cup. For some, this might be some yoga or mediation. Comedies and musicals are high on my list too. My go-to's are funny videos (thanks Jimmy Rees ) and shows (thanks Schmigadoon! and Pitch Perfect 1,2 &3).
🌷 Creating lockdown friendly events. These are great distractions and give you something to look forward to. Some of my favourites have included: family disco nights (thanks Tom Lowndes - Hot Dub Time Machine ), home Olympics and high tea (thanks Mary Eats Cake ).
🌷 Make planning your at-home events part of the fun. Send invites, put posters up around the house, get dressed up, make decorations, use the good china. The planning is often the best bit!

🙅🏻‍♀️ Post about every date, you can’t be everything to everyone
🙅🏻‍♀️ Post about significant dates you know nothing about (warning: if you have to Google what the date means, you probably shouldn’t be posting about it!)

Marketing strategies are where the magic starts to happen.

This is where you consider the insights gained from the previous sections of your marketing plan and determine how you will use this to achieve your objectives.

Example marketing strategies
🧩 Cross-selling to existing clients another service or product
🧩 Acquisition of new clients into your sales funnel
🧩 Retention of existing clients
🧩 Increasing your share of wallet with existing clients
🧩 Advocacy – delighting your clients so that they turn into advocates for your business

The marketing strategies determine the actions that you will take to bring the plan to life. These actions are your marketing tactics. This is where you will outline what channels you’ll be using and what you’ll be offering your ideal clients.

Q: Do I really need a marketing plan?

A: Yes, and there are many reasons why – but the most obvious one is to increase sales and grow your business.

Sure, you might be able to wing it – and see how you go. But think about how winging it in business feels. Self-doubt from not knowing where your next sale is coming from. Feeling uncertain and stressed.

It can also be exhausting without a marketing plan. Facing unexpected slow times – where you’re scrabbling to drum-up business, or just scraping through busy times - with your service level suffering.

Perhaps you’re attracting work or clients that keep you busy and pay the bills, but it’s not the work that you’re passionate about.

Compare this to what it feels like when you do have a marketing plan. Feeling organised and in control. Promoting your business with confidence, knowing how your actions are working towards your business goals.

A marketing plan is key to creating a successful and sustainable business – and who doesn’t want that?

Digital marketing… there’s a lot you could be doing.

How do you work out what channels are right for you, and where to start?

Here are my top three tips for getting your digital approach sorted.

1️⃣ First, get your digital home (your website!) working and converting.
2️⃣ Next, market to your customers and people you have an existing relationship with. You can do this via email, text, social media – and even snail mail! 🐌
3️⃣ Then, go for the lowest hanging fruit – those prospective customers who already need your service or product. You can do this via search advertising, search engine optimisation (SEO) and your Google My Business page.

Once you’ve exhausted the above options, then you can go broader with your digital marketing

Getting my planning on!

How good is it when you feel organised and in control?

For me, there’s nothing like knowing I’ve got my next steps mapped out. I don’t need to stress, I’m not stuck in reaction mode – I’ve got this.

Right now, I’m helping a few of my clients to map out their marketing approach for the coming year. We’re talking, who they’ll target, with what offers, via what channels – and when. I’m loving watching how this transforms their confidence and entire outlook for 2021.
