The belief that AI writing is just a sneaky way of stealing other people's work and passing it off as your own, like an opportunistic racoon reaching through your doggy door and pinching your door mat...

While it's true that AI models are trained on other people's writing, they don't merely copy-paste someone else's genius.

Chucking the same prompt in won't even get you the same response as someone else.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Instead, AI takes inspiration from more sources than our magnificent-yet-limited human brains could handle, and synthesises it into something brand spankin’ new.

Kinda like how us writers (and creatives in general) have been borrowing ideas and getting inspiration from others for centuries… 
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Game of Thrones took inspiration from Lord of the Rings.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
West Side Story from Romeo and Juliet.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Clueless from Jane Austen’s Emma.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The Chronicles of Narnia from The Bible.

And The Mortal Instruments from Harry Potter (the author even cut her teeth on HP + LOTR fanfic)

The real issue is less about taking inspiration and more about determining where the line is between being inspired and straight up plagiarism. 
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Because it's all been done before. And we're all just looking for unexpected connections and interesting ways to riff on the things we've encountered.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Just ask Austin Kleon, author of the fittingly titled Steal Like an Artist:

“Hey everyone, look at this not-great thing ChatGPT wrote. Isn’t it just The Worst?”

(Spoiler alert: it's not the tool, it's you bro 💀)

I spend wayyy too much time consuming AI-related content.

But I'm yet to see a solid example of why AI can’t write that doesn’t just scream “User Error!" louder than my toddler proclaiming it’s time to wake up.

And I get it, we need *something* to balance out the excessive hype. 

BUT IF YOU’RE GONNA MAKE SUCH CONFIDENT CLAIMS, YOU BETTER BRING YOUR FU***NG RECEIPTS, MY DUDES.

So when they confidently rock up with their examples but don’t share the prompt they used, or worse, they do and the prompt is *severely* lacking the context that even a human writer would need.

And then they post that first draft side by side with a piece they crafted (and iterated on) themselves, harnessing all that deliciously juicy insider knowledge marinating in their noggin?

It doesn’t make AI look bad. 

It just makes it obvious they haven’t bothered to go beyond putting a one sentence prompt into a word calculator and then patting themselves on the back for being able to write something better.

Here’s the thing though: ANYONE with an internet connection can open up ChatGPT and get it to write s**t stuff. It takes half a thought and seconds of your time. 

But it takes some testing, some research and as little as an ounce of knowledge around how writing and voice work, to get something infinitely less s**t.
