Activity does not always equal Productivity

A major event has taken place in the last couple of weeks, the arrival of my newborn son. It helps you to realise how out of perspective you have your priorities when you think that there could have been a better time and that you feel bad for taking time off.

The reality is that when I wasn’t present I was able to see things in a far more enlightened way. Without taking the time out to smell the roses we are actually robbing ourselves of more efficient use of our time. Then of course is the more obvious, more time doing what you actually want. No one has ever come to the end of their life wishing they could have spent more time at work, but many a person has spent their final few moments in regret at the special times that were missed. Mr Gates caught himself feeling bad for taking holidays, but after seeing what impact taking (and not taking them) had on his business he rarely misses an opportunity to get away on a “think week” now days.

You see it’s not the hours that we put into something that is always the determining factor but more so what is put into the hours. We wouldn’t just leaving the bike in first gear and just going hard at it, but learn how to ride properly, leveraged, and taking the time to change the gears. This will mean that we get where we want to go when we want to get there.

Intend Intent
This year has been that of great change for me. Not surprising really when two words were yelling at me from the end of the year before – Intentional Transition. But this transition has not come without the important ingredient of intent. This has become increasingly clear of late in seeing the difference in outcomes from just turning up and turning on.

You know the saying if you’re going to do something, then do it properly. Well, it’s true. Generally speaking those who are successful are so because they planned to be and got serious about getting there.

Looking back over my last week I can see where I had intent and where I did not. Instead of just turning up to a business function and just having nice conversations, turning on and being strategic. Instead of sulking because you have a big day at work before you/ behind you (or sometimes both), turning on and being active.

The reality is we’ve got to chase our prey. It’s not just going to jump into the boat. If you want a certain type of fish you’ve first got to go to the stream where THEY are swimming. It’s no good just saying you have the best bait in the world, you have to go to where they are. Then yes, the bait helps. Finally you need the right hook and grade of line. There’s no point feeding the fish if you can’t bring them in and reap the benefits. See, intentionality.

So this week what further knowledge is needed to be better positioned and what adjustments are required to turn up with intent?

The time tithe;
I don’t know how this one works, I just know, from oberservation and experience that it just does. Wish you had more time? Want to be more effective? Need some motivation? Yeh, don’t we all. Well this little trick is just what is needed to regain the reins on the runaway carriage of life.

The best part of this is that it’s really easy. Easy to say that is. But it’s that common misconception that knowledge is power that gets it unstuck. It’s not the knowledge that brings the power it’s the implementation of knowledge that really makes change. Ready here it is... DO THE IMPORTANT THINGS FIRST.

Amazed? Well that’s it, it’s that simple. Like I said when I started, I don’t know how it works but try it out and be amazed. This is derived from the one about money. I have heard of people speak of money like this, “When everyone else said they couldn’t afford to give, I recognised that I couldn’t afford not too”. It’s those same ones that continue to give in epic proportions today and contribute to the majority of charities and funds, sometimes ones they have started themselves.

So here’s how to put it into practice. You know the tasks that will actually get you to where you need to go, those ones that always get left to last that you’ll get around to.... Do them 1st, without excuse. Then proceed down the priority list. The trick is to try to get a bit proactive about this so as you don’t have urgent things screaming at you until you put off the important thing and it becomes important and urgent. The required result simply won’t be achieved if it isn’t given adequate time.

What is your first action, do you need help to collect your thoughts and stay accountable to getting the important tasks done? If you think you can’t afford to... yep you guessed it, you can’t afford not to. Perhaps you just need to put the time aside so you can have your own oxygen mask firmly attached before helping others. Or maybe sitting down to document and reflect to make sure you’re on track has been avoided way too long. Start now by making the first task and thing to do be to order the day.

Another notch on the belt

Last week I heard someone speak about how to create and break habits. Quite simply the process is to just do, or not do that particular task for 1 day. Every day then earns a tick and helps you to work toward the goal. Each progressive tick makes it harder to break the chain and gives you a feeling of accomplishment at how far you have already gone.

Does it Work? Well I got to say yes. Had a bad day with my wife not too long after so had to road test this one. Every hour that we didn’t argue we high fived. Before we knew it two days had passed without a single (serious) disagreement. It has really set a precedent for every day now because we know what is possible.
Why was it so successful? I believe that there are a few contributing factors to what made it work

1. Small goals – easy to achieve
2. Celebration – a great way to encourage yourself
3. History of success – it’s hard to break a chain with a few good wins behind you
4. Share it with someone – accountability works wonders
5. Fun – let’s face it, we’re all far more likely to get something done when it’s fun

Have fun this week plotting out what goals you can break down into daily (or hourly) tasks.
