AI is a brilliant tool. I use it every single day in my work - for ideas, for speed, for getting a first draft out of my head and onto the screen. It's changed the way I work and I'm not going back.

But here's what AI can't do.

It can't show up to your local market and genuinely chat to someone about your product. It can't remember that a loyal customer just went through something hard and check in on them. It can't build the kind of brand personality that makes people feel like they actually know you before they've ever met you.

That stuff? That's still human. That's still yours.

The businesses winning right now aren't the ones who've handed everything over to AI - they're the ones using it as a tool while keeping their voice, their story, and their relationships front and centre.

Let's talk about what $500 in Meta Ads actually does in 2026.

Here's the truth - $500 is a perfectly reasonable starting budget. But only if the campaign is set up properly.

If you boost a post with $500:
πŸ‘Ž Vague targeting based on loose interests
πŸ‘Ž No clear objective
πŸ‘Ž A bit of reach, a few likes, and not much else

If you run a proper Meta Ads campaign with $500:
πŸ‘ You choose exactly what you want - leads, website clicks, messages
πŸ‘ You build a custom audience based on real behaviour
πŸ‘ You retarget people who've already shown interest
πŸ‘ You test creative so you know what's actually working

Same $500. Completely different result.

The platform isn't the problem. The setup is.

If you've tried Meta Ads and walked away frustrated, it's probably not the budget - it's what was running behind the scenes.

If your website is slow, hard to navigate, or hasn't been touched since 2021 - people are leaving. And they're not coming back.

Here's the thing most small business owners don't realise: your website isn't just a digital brochure. It's your hardest working team member. It's selling, convincing, and converting (or not) around the clock while you're doing everything else.

A clunky, outdated site doesn't just look unprofessional, it actively costs you customers. People will click away in seconds if it doesn't load fast, look good on mobile, or tell them exactly what to do next.

The good news? It doesn't have to be a massive rebuild. Sometimes small fixes make a big difference.

When did you last actually audit your social media?

Run through this checklist and be honest with yourself:

βœ… Profile photo - clear, current, and on brand?
βœ… Bio - does it tell people exactly what you do and who you help?
βœ… Link in bio - is it working and going somewhere useful?
βœ… Highlights - organised, labelled, and up to date?
βœ… Pinned post - is your best content front and centre?
βœ… Content mix - are you educating, entertaining, and selling?
βœ… Posting frequency - are you showing up consistently or disappearing for weeks?

So… how did you score? πŸ‘‡

Drop your number in the comments (be honest, no judgement here) and if you got under 5 - let's fix that.

Done is better than perfect - especially on social media.

The algorithm doesn't reward perfection. It rewards consistency. The businesses showing up in your feed every week aren't necessarily the ones with the best content, they're the ones who didn't stop.

While you're waiting for the perfect photo, the perfect caption, or the perfect moment to post, your competitors are already in front of your audience.

You don't need to be perfect. You just need to show up.

Start with one post. Then another. Build the habit before you build the strategy. The rest follows.

Are you making any of these mistakes?

These are the five Instagram mistakes I see small businesses make on repeat and honestly, they're all fixable once you know what to look for.

The good news is you don't need a big budget or a full rebrand to sort them out. You just need a strategy that actually makes sense for your business.

Harsh? Maybe. But hear me out...

When you hit "Boost," Meta takes your money and shows your post to people who are vaguely in your area and loosely match an interest category. No funnel. No objective. No real targeting. Just… vibes.

A proper Meta Ads campaign inside Ads Manager lets you:

πŸ‘‰ Choose what you actually want (leads, website clicks, purchases, messages)
πŸ‘‰ Build a custom audience based on real behaviour
πŸ‘‰ Test creative so you know what's working
πŸ‘‰ Retarget people who've already shown interest

Boosting has its place - but it shouldn't be your whole strategy.

If you're spending money on Meta and not seeing results, it's probably not the platform. It's the approach.

When someone Googles YOUR business, what do they find?

Your Google Business Profile is completely free, takes less than an hour to set up properly, and is one of the easiest marketing wins available to any local small business. And yet most businesses either haven't claimed it, or set it up years ago and never touched it since.

Here's what an optimised GBP actually does for you:

βœ… Shows up when locals search for what you do
βœ… Displays your hours, location, photos and reviews front and centre
βœ… Builds trust before a customer even visits your website
βœ… Helps you rank in Google Maps searches
βœ… It's free. Did I mention it's free?

If your profile has no photos, an old phone number, or zero reviews - that's the first thing to fix before spending a single dollar on ads.

Need help getting it sorted? You know where to find me πŸ‘‡
