A live look at nest making.

These little brown birds (LBB) can be so tricky to ID. I think this little one is a Yellow Thornbill.

Thank you to for this beautiful feature. After a challenging year, it’s given me a real sense of momentum and such a positive start to the year.

Moving to Shoalhaven Heads in 2020 has been a true sea change.

When I first moved here, strangers would go out of their way to say hello. It really did feel like the friendliest place in the world.

“The Heads,” as it’s known locally, is a small regional South Coast town with a big heart, where people are genuinely supportive and quick to offer friendship.

Feeling very thankful to be here. ❤️

I caught this clever Australian Raven smashing open an egg on the rock, with a bit of egg on its face.

Ravens are opportunistic feeders and will use hard surfaces to help access food. They eat a wide range of things, from insects and carrion to eggs, chicks and small animals.

At our local shorebird nesting site, raven predation on eggs and chicks has been noticeably high this season.

This photo was taken on the sandstone cliffs of the Shoalhaven River. I think the eggshells may be from a duck, but I’m not certain.

It wasn’t until I was editing this photo and zoomed in to check detail that I noticed the cute little faces on this plant. iNaturalist identifies it as a Small-leaved Plane - also known as Mickey Mouse plant which makes sense. Unfortunately it’s an invasive species.

It’s been a big year of caring for family, so getting outdoors to birdwatch and walk has become even more important, though finding the time can be tricky! I’ve been grabbing little pockets of nature whenever I can, and it’s amazing how much better I feel after even a short wander.

I was lucky to spot these two little darlings near Loftus, flitting around the striking red Gymea lilies. It was my first time seeing variegated fairy wrens, the male with his stunning markings, and the female, understated with soft grey plumage and a lovely blue tail.

If you’re interested in getting into birdwatching, the Aussie Bird Count is on from 20–26 October. It’s fun, easy, and a great activity to do with kids or on your own!

Little Brown Bird, or LBB, is a birder’s nickname for those small, fast, brownish birds that can be tricky to tell apart. They dart around and often just look… well, brown! Here are a few tips to help you ID some of them:

🪶 Brown Thornbill
Check for fine dark V-shaped striations on the pale breast, a large eye, and a reddish-brown rump. Their back is grey-brown and their throat and breast are grey.

🪶 White-browed Scrubwren
Look for a white line above and below the eye. Often confused with the Brown Thornbill.

🪶 Western Gerygone
A pale brown-grey bird with a white chin, throat, and eye ring. Adults have red eyes; juveniles have brown. If you see it in flight, look for a black and white tail.

Next time you’re out, take a closer look there are loads more LBBs out there. They might all look brown at first, but each one is special (and super cute) in their own way.

This photo doesn’t show the full story — there were 120 yellow-tailed black cockatoos flying over the top of me while I was on a bush walk in Jervis Bay. It was a wild and beautiful moment that left me feeling exhilarated, like I’d witnessed something really special.

Later on my walk, I saw two late stragglers flying past, calling out, waiting for a call back — hoping to reunite with their flock.

I like to think they found each other again.
