Your first time opening Canva can feel like standing in front of a blank whiteboard with an audience watching. So here’s what I want you to know: start with a template. Every time.

Canva wasn’t built to intimidate you — it was built to make design accessible to everyone. And once you know where the three basic tools live (text, colour, photos), you have everything you need to make something genuinely good.

Swipe through for your beginner cheat sheet, then go open Canva and actually try it. 👉

Your only goal: change a template until it feels like you made it.

Have you ever wondered about the person behind Blue Wren Design Studio?

Well, here I am. Minus a few wrinkles (thank you so much, Canva). But, essentially, me.

My eldest niece asked me once if I knew what part of me was her favourite. (I didn’t, and - given the lack of filter of a 5 year old - I was almost too scared to ask!)

However, her answer surprised me. “It’s your happy, smiley face, Aunty” she said. And I was happy with that. Life is hard enough without facing it with anger.

Have you ever been happily surprised (and grateful) for the sweet observation of a child?

I’d love to hear about it!

In the meantime, please also enjoy the photo of my Canva Community friends and I enjoying each other’s company at tonight’s in Sydney. Thanks for a fabulous night, (and especially our lovely host - and my gorgeous friend - ).

It’s the very first day of 2024. So do you have big plans?

Design is a personal thing, and even tho’ we can be happy with a graphic, knowing that it’s been specifically chosen and appreciated by a client is a rewarding feeling.
