8 steps to train your Facebook Feed from Mari Smith
Get rid of the useless feed suggestions!

Have you noticed lately how filled your Facebook feed is with all kinds of irrelevant content from people and business you don't even know? And way more ads than ever? 🤯 Maybe lots of older content as well?! 🤔

In a blatant attempt to compete with TikTok, Meta has been utterly relentless in pushing out its 'AI-powered discovery engine.'

This is the algorithm that basically tracks your every move and strives to know you better than anyone on the planet.. And then you start getting all this recommended content in your feeds, supposedly predicting what you'll be interested in.

It's the same algorithm across Facebook, Instagram and Threads.

And, it's the very same formula that has made TikTok so successful and 'sticky.'

Our brains get these dopamine hits because there's an element of surprise; you never know what you're going to get. 😮

BUT, to be fair, there's also a mega element of frustration as well, right?!

Because if the discovery engine gets too carried away, then your feeds are pretty much rendered useless.

The good news is there *are* ways to train all the Meta feed algorithms... somewhat! Here are my suggestions for you:

💥💥🚂 8 STEPS TO TRAIN YOUR FACEBOOK FEED 🚂 💥💥

1️⃣ Adjust the settings per post by clicking/tapping the 3 dots on any organic post in your feed. You can choose to hide, show more, show less, snooze, unfollow. You can also do the same for ads. And you also can get to 'Manage your Feed' under the 3 dots on any post. Yes, this practice can be super time consuming. But it can be worth a try!

2️⃣ Take advantage of answering the poll any time Facebook asks if you want to see MORE or LESS of something (a post or ad).

3️⃣ Make good use of your FAVORITES lists. This is where you can add up to 30 different friends, people you follow, or business pages as a Favorite. You're supposed to be able to see more of these sources in your main feed. But, see #4 below!

4️⃣ Start interacting with more of your Favorite people and Friends in the DMs. This informs the algos that you want to see more of those sources of content.

5️⃣ Periodically look at your FEEDS. This shows the full chronological content in each feed. On both desktop and mobile, you have the option to see individual feeds for: All (default), Favorites, Friends, Groups, and Pages. Engage with content in these feeds to help train the algorithms.

6️⃣ Regularly skim the FRIENDS feed, in particular, and engage with specific people. This should help train the algos to show you more of those friends. Just remember that if you have a lot of friends and a few that tend to post huge volumes, just know those folks will dominate your Friends Feed! 🤪 (But see #7!)

7️⃣ Review your entire list of friends (maybe about 1x/year), and don't be afraid to unfriend people you genuinely do not know... or who have deactivated their accounts, or who haven't posted in eons, or who push out huge volumes of daily content that you're not interested in. Make your own criteria of that's important to you for unfriending. (Tbh, I'm not a fan of those posts we see doing the rounds where people say they'll only keep friends that engage with a certain post. To me, that's not really fair, given we're all at the same disadvantage of how the algos work and not everyone will see such posts!)

8️⃣ Go through all the Pages you like/follow - it may be time to unlike/unfollow some there, too. And potentially add more likes/follows that genuinely interest you.

Alas, we'll never get 'rid' of the suggested content fully. Because that's Meta's agenda. And, apparently, it is driving more time on site: about 6-7% for both Facebook and Instagram. So there's that. Hmm.

What else would you add to this list?

I'd love to hear from you. What are you currently experiencing with your Meta feeds?

Facebook's new AI writing tool

Facebook's new AI writing tool

Are you seeing the 'Write with AI' prompt when you go to make a Facebook post on mobile now? 📱

It's rolling out to more users on both Android and iOS. If you don't see it yet, make sure your Facebook app is updated to the latest version.

It's relatively simple so far.

Start writing something to give the generative AI writing tool a prompt... then select from one of the simple prompts:

👉🏻 Fix grammar, Longer, Shorter, Professional, Funny, Heartfelt, Inspirational.

Or, type your own prompt in.

NOTE: So far, the prompt field is *very* tiny with just one small line visible. It's clearly not set up (yet) for longer prompts.

In my example here, you'll see I selected the 'Funny' one first, then typed in, 'Acting like a social media marketing professional, include benefits for businesses.' The third suggested caption was pretty good, really. (I put a green check next to it in the screenshot).

"Transform your social media strategy with Facebook's innovative generative AI technology. Write engaging posts, drive traffic, and boost sales now!"

Not bad, eh?

I mean, I wouldn't go so far as to say this simple tool in its current form is going to transform your actual strategy. But certainly it will give you some creative ideas... hopefully!

As I've written about in the past few weeks, Mark Zuckerberg / Meta is on a mission to create a world-class AI assistant for basically everyone in the world. Creators, businesses, developers and more. 😲

Meta is investing tens of billions of dollars into the big fancy processors (NVIDIA H100 and similar) that help build AI applications.

Friends, this is just the VERY TIP of the iceberg in terms of what we're going to see with Meta's foray into the generative AI field.

Like most all big tech companies, Meta has been using AI for a decade+.

What's NEW is the massive prevalence and adoption of GENERATIVE AI, made popular by ChatGPT blasting onto the scenes in late 2022. 🤖

Soon, Meta will bake AI into more and more of it's products and features. We'll start having the ability to generate TEXT, IMAGE, VIDEO, and AUDIO from our own prompts or suggested ones. This will be right inside Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger, and Threads apps - mobile and desktop. And Meta Business Suite.

In addition, the actual AI Assistant that Zuckerberg is so enthusiastic about will have other capabilities that should really help in the business world. Such as customer support, shopping suggestions, FAQs, tapping into vast knowledge bases that businesses create for their customers, and a whole lot more.

Please don't get too 'down' on *ALL* of AI. It's not all bad!! YES, there are some crazy, heinous, whacky things going on in the world with deepfakes and awful synthetic media. And we're only going to see more and more of this, sadly.

🩵🩵🩵 But, my friends, NOW is the time to dig deep -- stay FOCUSED, create even more VALUE and MEANING for your audience, foster GENUINE relationships, and build TRUST most of all. If you're using AI in any capacity to create content, I'm firmly in the camp that we should disclose that. 🩵🩵🩵

Have you checkout Meta's new social media platform, Threads?
Launched on Thursday, Meta takes on Twitter! http://spr.ly/6180PHvbn

We have created an account to have a dig around!

On Threads, you can create text-based posts with up to 500 characters, as well as share photos and videos up to five minutes long. The app looks relatively similar to Twitter, featuring a minimal interface with the options to like, comment, repost, and share threads. Since Threads is closely tied to Instagram, you can log in with your Instagram username and easily follow all the same people you follow on the other platform.

“The volatility and the unpredictability of what seemed to be going on there” presented Instagram with an opportunity, he says.
