Seeing as we're under attack from the elements, perhaps it's not so silly to consider the age-old 'moat' system for some rural homes.

To work the system, we configure our dams with an island in the middle and an accessway.

The benefits are: increased safety from bushfires, increased tree plantings closer to dwellings for shade/cooling, a water source for firefighting, constant water storage, possible aquaculture (such as Perch/Crayfish), and, arguably, improved mental health.

Child safety, of course, would be an issue.
