I’m a brand stylist and illustrator and more recently a socials stylist with over 30 years experience in the industry... yes I was doing this BEFORE computers when it was all created by imagination and hand! A few years ago? I was terrified to show up as myself online!! I knew exactly what I wanted… but hitting “post”? Nope! Full-body hot flashes! Snd wr know what that does to us!! 😂😂

I had the vision! The fire! The message! Same as you do! But the fear? Louder!

So I stayed hidden! Watched my dream clients hire other less experienced but more visible ladies while I stayed invisible… and resentfully “nice!” 😭

Fast forward to now - and here I am… surrounded by goats literally fighting for my attention while I film content for the internet! Who even am I? 😂

The difference was this... I stopped waiting to feel ready, stopped trying to be who I thought I “should” be and started showing up as the woman I actually am! And everything shifted after that!

Clients! Confidence! Fun!
(Yep, FUN! Even when goats are just about to send you flying!! 😂😂)

So if you wanna be the GOAT (I had to do it 😂😂) in your industry, you’ve gotta swallow that fear and hit POST!! It’s a non negotiable!

Now!! Real!! Flaws and all!!

Because people are done with fake perfection! They don’t want curated masks, surface-level vibes and generic content!

They want something that hits! That feels human! Honest! Alive! Real!

Not another “look at me” brand with zero depth! They want to feel you - not just scroll past you!

Yes, some people will judge! (Hi haters 👋)
But others? They’ll flock to you - because you’re finally letting them see YOU!

So something I’ve learnt from working with women just like you, and honestly from my own hiding years... everyone hides differently! Your hiding pattern isn’t the same as mine, and what you need to shift it isn’t the same either!

Been back at the hairdresser!! Again! Because this pink is not low maintenance! 😂🩷🤦🏻‍♀️

And while I was sitting there doom scrolling (AGAIN!) I kept thinking about what I said last week and something I’m now hearing all the time “AI makes everything sound the same!” Im reading this multiple times! Every day! 🤦🏻‍♀️

And I don’t actually think that’s exactly true!!

I think most people are expecting AI to know them when they’ve never properly introduced themselves! I mean where are your manners? 😂

So before AI can sound like you it has to know you!

It needs to know your personality! Your voice! Your stories! Your opinions! The quirky little things that make people remember you!

Because AI can only work with what it’s given!

And if all it’s been given is a job title, an audience and a prompt… then generic sh$t is exactly what you’ll get back!

The businesses that are unforgettable right now aren’t the ones with the best prompts or hooks, they’re the ones who’ve done the work to know who they are before they sit down to write them!

Which got me thinking... (dangerous I know!😂)

I thought I was creating a fun little quiz and it turns out I accidentally built a machine for calling women out!! 😂

Because the messages I’ve been getting are wild!”How did this know me so well?!” “There is NO WAY a quiz figured me out like that.” “I feel personally attacked.” 😂 Sorry not sorry! 😂😂

Honestly, I’ve been laughing, but I’m also not even a little bit surprised!

Here’s what months of research calls and way too many conversations with women in business has confirmed for me… most women don’t have a visibility problem! They have a hiding problem and the hiding just looks different depending on who you are!

Some hide behind perfection, some behind everyone else’s strategy, some behind their notes app and some behind “I’ll do it tomorrow when the inspiration hits!”

But they’re all hiding and most of them don’t even know it!

I don’t think most women are hiding online because they lack strategy!! As a matter of fact I bet many of us have spent many 000s on strategy!

I think they’re hiding because visibility feels emotionally unsafe, and honestly, that makes complete sense!!

Most of us Gen X women were raised to be agreeable, to not be “too much,” to make everyone else comfortable, to stay humble, to tone it down!

We were literally conditioned to not draw attention to ourselves, so of course showing up boldly online feels uncomfortable as hell, especially in a world where everyone’s watching, everyone’s comparing and everyone’s performing their highlight reel at you 24 hours a day! And the fear of judgement is real!!

And then AI came along and made it even easier to hide, blend in, sound polished and avoid the vulnerability of actually being seen!

Now look, I love AI and I use it every single day! But I think the real magic happens when you stop asking “how do I sound better online?” and start asking “how do I sound more like myself?”

And I say that knowing full well what you’re thinking right now - “easy for you to say Jen, you’ve got pink hair, a personality the size of a small country and zero filter!” 😂

Fair! But I wasn’t always this version of me online! I spent years hiding behind polished, professional, carefully curated content that looked great and felt completely dead inside! I was using every tool available to sound more right instead of more me! And my content was forgettable because of it!

So when I say AI is making the hiding easier, I’m not pointing fingers! I’m talking from experience!

Because that’s the thing people actually remember - not perfect branding, not another five tips carousel, but you, your energy, your quirks, your perspective, your stories, your voice! That’s the unforgettable part! 🦩

As you can I’m at the hairdressers today with lots of spare time on my hands 🤦🏻‍♀️ - because this level of pink? It requires HOURS!! 😂😂 Which means I have plenty of time to doom scroll! 🤦🏻‍♀️ and yes I do know I shouldn’t! 😂😂 but I am not loving what I’m seeing!

And here’s the thing that gets me the most!!! It’s not the businesses that are clearly still finding their feet! It’s the ones who KNOW better! The ones with the experience, the story, the personality - handing it all over to AI and wondering why nothing’s connecting!

Your audience can soooo feel the difference between you and some ai prompt! They might not be able to name it, but they definitely feeling it! There’s a level of real in the way we say things that no tool can replicate - and when that’s missing, people just keep scrolling right past, even if the information is good… exactly like I’ve done today!

I love ai! I use ai! But don’t let it suck your soul out!

The best thing you can do right now, in a feed full of robotic squawking seagulls, is just actually show up as yourself!! Mid hair colour, ranty tanty and all! The ranty tanty you almost didn’t post!! 😂😂 The opinion you thought might be a tad polarising! The story you’re scared to tell online! Just do it!!!! Because that one!! That’s the one that lands!! That’s the one that makes you unforgettable!!

ANNND there’s your content! That’s your brand! And it’s the one thing nobody else can copy!🦩  Ps I nearly didn’t hit post on this today but I was just a bit too sad not to! 😭😭😂😂

So here I am in 2019, in my full hiding era!!

I did all the right things on the surface! I had the photoshoot! I was posting! I was doing all the things I thought I should do! But every single image was a carefully curated, highly edited version of me, not with a filter, but with everything real about me quietly removed before anyone got to see it, because that felt safe for me!

Show up, but not too much! Be visible, but not really seen! Look the part, but keep the real me tucked firmly out of sight!

And the worst part was that I didn’t even realise I was doing it! I really thought I was showing up! 🤦🏻‍♀️

Sound familiar? 💖

What I didn’t understand back then was that the real issue wasn’t confidence, it was safety! Somewhere along the way, being fully seen had stopped feeling safe, so I’d learned to edit myself before I even started!

Polished enough to be liked, but never so real I might be judged!

And the right clients found me! I stood on stages! I won awards! 😱

And none of it happened because I suddenly became fearless! It happened because I got curious enough to figure out my own hiding pattern and then started doing something about it!
