AI is changing how people find local businesses. Here's what that means for yours.
Google's new AI agent, Gemini Spark, doesn't just show search results. It compares businesses, checks their details, and can potentially book appointments on a customer's behalf. If your Google Business Profile is thin on detail, you might not even get considered.

The good news is that businesses already doing the right thing in their community are better placed than they realise. Community trust and a complete online presence work together. You genuinely need both, and if you've been building real relationships with your customers, that counts for a lot more than you might think.
If you're not sure whether your online presence is keeping up, that's exactly what I help with.

A Findability Audit will show you clearly what's working and what's worth fixing. Or just reach out for a chat, happy to talk it through.

AI is getting smarter. But that's not actually the advantage you think it is.
The businesses that are going to stand out aren't the ones that automate everything. They're the ones that stay human. The ones that communicate well, build real trust, and create an experience people actually remember.
I wrote about this in my latest post, including why so many people end up going back to soften and humanise the content AI generates for them. That instinct says everything.
If you're a small business owner in Sydney trying to figure out where AI fits in (and where it doesn't), it's worth a read.

Most small businesses don't have a traffic problem. They have a visibility problem.

Google has released a playbook on optimising your Google Business Profile, and the principles apply just as strongly here in Australia.

The businesses getting the most from local search aren't doing anything complicated. They're just getting the basics right consistently.

Here's what actually moves the needle:

- The right business category
- Quality, recent photos
- Collecting and replying to reviews
- Booking links set up properly

Small steps. Real results.

Your GBP is one of the best free tools available to grow a local business. When it's set up well, it works for you around the clock.

If it feels like a lot to manage, that's what we're here for. At Seedwell Co., we help small businesses make the most of their GBP.

This is what can happen when your online presence is set up properly.

A Crows Nest, Sydney hair salon over 5 months:
138 → 5,206 Google profile views
53 → 714 customer actions
0 → 352 website clicks
4 → 61 phone calls

No ads, no gimmicks. Just a properly optimised Google Business Profile and a website that supports it.

A lot of small businesses aren’t showing up when people search for what they do, which means they’re missing out on customers who are already looking.

If you’ve ever wondered whether your website or Google profile is actually working for you, I’m always happy to take a look and point you in the right direction.

There is a particular kind of fear that does not announce itself as fear.

It disguises itself as wisdom. As prudence. As thoroughness. It says things like "I just need a little more time to refine this" and it feels responsible. It feels like you are taking it seriously.

But if I am honest, beneath all of that careful language is something much simpler.

I am afraid of what I could lose if I start and it does not work.

Nine months into building Seedwell Co., helping local businesses get found online, and I am still finding ways to polish instead of ship. To research instead of reach out.

Perfectionism, for me, has often been procrastination wearing better clothes.

I wrote about it. Imperfectly. Before the website was ready.

Nine months post redundancy, I kept refining instead of starting. This is an honest look at how perfectionism becomes avoidance, and what it takes to finally begin.

When I was made redundant, I wanted to build beautiful websites for local businesses.
But I quickly realised something: most local businesses don't need "beautiful" — they need to be found.
Your website might be the most stunning shop in the world, but if it's sitting in the middle of a forest with no roads to it, what's the point?
That's when I fell down the SEO rabbit hole.
I stopped obsessing over pixels and started building highways — making sure that when someone asks Google for a plumber, physio, or salon, the path leads to you, not the competitor down the road with worse service but better visibility.
Being found matters more than being fancy.
New blog post up now about the pivot that changed how I think about web design entirely.

I set out to build beautiful websites, but learned that being found matters more. A reflection on SEO, clarity, and helping small businesses survive.
