Google just released an important update about reviews.

TLDR: They are not only looking at product reviews from now moving forwards.

If you publish reviews of products, services, destinations, games, movies or ANYTHING you should pay attention.

Any content written with the purpose of providing a recommendation, giving an opinion, or providing analysis falls under this update.

3rd-party reviews such as those posted by users in the reviews section of a product or services page are not included. It's creating review content on the site - such as articles that are reviewing something, head-to-head comparisons or ranked-lists of recommendations.

Reviews can be about any topic. There can be reviews of products such as laptops or winter jackets, pieces of media such as movies or video games, or services and businesses.

So what does Google consider a high-quality review?

This won't work, at least long term and could even HARM your SEO (keyword stuffing).

Sentiment and velocity.

Have a review strategy to persuade your customers at the point they are happiest, to leave a review.

The more positive [legit] reviews you get and the higher the frequency of these, the higher you will rank.

Pro Tip: Respond to the reviews. You get better rankings and it gives a great impression to prospective customers.

According to the Search Demand Curve (Ahrefs), around 70% of all search consists of long-tail keywords.

What's more, around 15% of searches every day are NEW and never before searched.

So if your business only optimises for the handful of 'buyer' keywords:

❌ You're leaving a LOT of traffic and visibility on the table
❌ You're allowing competitors to reach your target customers earlier
❌ You're losing sales (see above point)

One more thing: Optimising for long tail keywords, usually HELPS YOU RANK for your top priority keywords.

How do you optimise for long tail keywords?

Winter is coming as Tony Robbins would say. (yes, things will continue to get worse)

Souring inflation and interest rates, supply chain disruption, global unrest and large scale lay offs among other things, will cause hardship and belt tightening for many consumers and businesses.

BUT...

1. Everything is cyclical.

This will pass and when it does, you want to be positioned in front of the bounce back.

2. Offense over defense

Are you going to retreat in your little tortoise shell, batten down the hatches and ride it out? Good luck with that.

That is what TONS of businesses will do. This creates opportunity for the ones who go all out offense. While they retreat and contract, you attack and win.

Even if conversion rates decrease, customer aquisition cost increases, look at what you can implement or launch to help counter that.

Don't discredit audience, brand and mindshare. People might not be buying like they used to and margins might be thinner, but if you are active and growing your brand and audience, you are positioned strongly for the inevitable bounce back (see point 1 above).

3. Marketing will always be needed... but quality & effectiveness are infinitely more important

When things are tough, budgets get cut, there's fewer customers and they can be more discerning.

You might need to work harder to get the customer.

The businesses delivering low quality or average work, even good work in some cases, will struggle to win and retain the business... especially if they are LESS active in generating this demand.

But the few who are great at what they do and work hard... you will be in high demand so see point 2 above and get after it!
