On this day, The Flags Act was given Royal Assent, making the Australian flag 🇦🇺 the official national flag. Its design was chosen out of competition in which nearly 33,000 people took part. The Menzies government introduced the Flags Act to encourage the public to use the Blue Ensign instead of the Union Jack. Its promotion helped solidify Australia’s unique idenity while maintaining its British heritage as a point of pride. Today, while it is burned by activists and replaced by elites, the Australian people still proudly fly the Australian flag 🇦🇺
