Whilst China remains important and will continue to be the engine of growth in the Asian Century, we're going to see greater emphasis on South East Asia, the 10 countries that make up the ASEAN nations and the new focus of the Government as Australia seeks to diversify its interests in the region. I will be addressing the challenges, complexities and opportunities in the Asian region in future keynotes and blogs as well as uncovering new business and investment opportunities for business leaders and entrepreneurs.

The emergence of 'The Global South' as an organised grouping, and its increasing influence in the world (in trade, investment and global governance) is raising difficult questions for the developed world to address. Previously known as ‘third world’ or ‘underdeveloped’, these countries have seen their middle class populations explode from 150 million to around 1.5 billion (3 billion by 2030) meaning that they are already replacing western consumers as the engine of global economic growth. Many have either joined, or applied to join, the BRICS Leadership Group, suggesting that they will soon be marshalled into a more formal power bloc. If you haven’t already heard of the term “Global South”, and realised that this group of countries represents 88% of the world’s population, this would be a good moment to give it more attention.

If you haven’t heard of the term “Global South” before, this would be a good moment to give it some attention. 88% of the world’s population live in the countries highlighted in red on the map below, in the main comprising the people and political leaders of Asia, Africa and Latin America. T...

When you travel around Asia and see the world from an Asian perspective, you really notice the looming presence of “The West” in every conversation about the future. In very crude terms, you could define “The West” as being represented by two blocs: AUKUS – the so-called “Trilateral Secu...

It seems I’m not the only one getting old, especially in the Asia Pacific region which, as can be seen from the latest infographic from Visual Capitalist below, will soon be home to 1 billion people over age 65. It's both heartening and encouraging to see photos released from last week’s meeting at the Great Hall of the People between Chinese President Xi Jinping and representatives of the US business, strategic and academic communities. Even some of the most hardened cynics and detractors would, on balance, agree that meetings like this are positive for both countries (and the world) and a welcome relief from recent encounters between political leaders which take on a far more serious and confrontational tone. Read my blog for more...

Relationships before Transactions - Despite some of Asia’s significant economic advances in recent times, their approach to doing business remains refreshingly similar to the way they’ve done business over the past one thousand years i.e. they only do business with people they know, like and trust. It means we need to put the relationship first and take a long-term view about transactions. This advice will be especially valuable for Australian winemakers if/when the tariffs imposed on Australian wine are lifted. Read my blog for three tips for winemakers aiming to get it right this time...

Following last week’s successful visit to Australia by China’s Foreign Minister, Wang Yi, there appears to be a high expectation (at least according to the media) that the current tariffs on Australian wine imposed by China in late 2020 will be lifted, perhaps as early as next month. If this hap...
