Think of it this way, can you really imagine the difference between a packed stadium with 40,000 people versus another with 60,000? There are too many people for us to really appreciate the 50% difference.

It is just a lot of people!



Our instincts tell us bigger is better. People throw big numbers out there to entice you in. Take the lottery for example. You see some with prizes over $100M. It's hard to comprehend what you would do with this and in truth most of us would be happy to just get $1M.

Here is another example, a credit card offers you 150,000 points to join. Seems huge - surely with that many points you can buy something worthwhile. 20 years ago it took less points than that to buy a round the world plane ticket, but now it will barely get you a one way domestic flight.

Then on the flip side, small numbers can emotionally drive us, because we can imagine them easily. In the holiday periods we hear news reports about a road toll. 3 people losing their life in a road accident is something we can all feel.

We check apps and drive to another suburb or find a brand where we can save 4c/litre on petrol. The smallest of numbers.

As a business owner you don't need to offer 'big' numbers as discounts or rewards. People will come to you if they see a small but real difference. Shopping with you can give them a small reward, but it can also make a very real, small but significant difference to a cause they love.
