Pop ups can be great, but they can also be a giant pain in the butt!

When used badly, they can increase your bounce rate, and decrease your Google ranking.

When used well, they can increase your leads and conversions, so let’s be on that side of the coin.

- Keep pop ups off the home page, this is the one that Google penalises you for.
- Make sure pop ups have a clear close button which is big enough to click (and actually works!)
- Make sure pop ups only show once per user so they’re not being shown over and over.

This one I’m pretty passionate about, because it’s often overlooked or misunderstood! If you have a breach, it can also be easily missed, because how often do you look at your website? Daily? Weekly? Or even monthly?

And for good reason. Websites should be there, in the background, like a round the clock employee working hard for you. No sleep needed. No salary required.

So most of the time you’d only realise there’s been an issue when a potential client is kind enough to let you know! And in that case, how many leads have you already lost?

So let’s get down to it.

- Use two factor authentication.
- Use unique, strong passwords.
- Change the default login URL.
- Use Wordfence, free version is ok, premium version is better.
- Ensure your site is being backed up daily.
- Run updates regularly.

And the biggie. Be selective with the software you use on your site while also keeping em to a minimum. Choose industry leaders who are demonstrating continuous improvements and have reputable reviews. Often this means paid! There are ongoing costs involved with a website!

Did you know your website is just a collection of files and folders? Which is good news, because it means you can save a copy! Just like working in word, we can set up an auto save via your hosting package, and that copy can be downloaded at any time. This is super helpful if your site encounters a technical error, a security breach, or a vulnerability. Those saved copies can be uploaded over a problem site, and allow us developers to patch any vulnerabilities, or fix errors before they occur.

Our website packages include daily backups, and one recovery per calendar year if required. For most clients, this is never used, but it’s nice to know it’s there just in case 🦴

What you say is everything! Our tips for website copy that converts:
- keep it snappy. Sentences should be no more than 25 words.
- Avoid repetition. Dont use the same words over and again.
- Use design conventions to enhance scan-ability. Headers, bold text, bullet points, white space. Avoid a wall of text wherever possible.
- Utilise graphics. Is there a place an icon or image can be subbed for text? These increase interest on the page and can often convey more than a paragraph of text!

This one goes hand in hand with our previous post about engaging content. Typography is a big part of creating that wow factor. Typography incorporates the layout and structure of text, but also the style of font chosen for each website, and the mood / feeling it conveys.

For example, it may not be a great choice to use a script font on a builders website, but it may work well for a photographers.

Video is an epic way to tell your business story and quickly build trust with potential clients. There’s just one problem - bandwidth! Videos, when used incorrectly can massively impact a websites speed, which can in turn effect a sites ranking with Google. So we recommend embedding videos via an upload to YouTube, and turning off Autoplay to stop any potential performance issues.
