Six degrees of separation moments…

Leigh Harry, Chair of Tourism East has announced he’s stepping down from the board governing Yarra Valley tourism after 10 years at the end of a long career. Lots of big efforts and outcomes achieved. šŸ‘

It’s not a role for the feint hearted!

We almost crossed workplace paths years ago at the Melbourne Exhibition Centre Trust when I did a stint in corporate affairs that included a tad of ghost writing for the CEO at the time.

In more recent years I (now!) fondly remember him quieting me down as I jumped up on my soap box sticking up for the Hurstbridge region side of the western Yarra Valley.

I’d stamped my foot to get a seat at the round table discussions with a dozen vested local businesses in Nillumbik - hosted by the beautiful - to have a say about a ten year Plan.

I had my Hurstbridge Village hat on at the time and was speaking up for surrounding areas as well.

It took him a while after that to stop being stern with me - but he got there! 😊

Later I was invited to attend one of a number of research groups and I influenced Tourism East getting grown up influencers as part of their marketing plan.

I’d pointed out that as gorgeous as young Instagram influencers posing at wineries looked, it’s usually the grownups (I’m not saying old here!😁) who have the time, dollars and inclination to be buying the cases of wine on the way out.

(Yes, some personal research backed up my stance!)

As well as my work with individual businesses, I’ve been building a following on social media for to encourage businesses, of all kinds, to work together and cross promote, beyond borders - just simple logistics how locals interact in a 30 minute radius around Hurstbridge.

Magazine style website coming…

Tourism East has outstanding reach and massive exposure to tourism markets, local and overseas. A huge accomplishment!

Algorithm hack! ā€˜Just’ film a boat unloading (in suburbia) a massive tuna - and get crazy attention by lots of fishermen (it was ā€œthis bigā€) who envy a whopping tuna catch! 🤣

Simple instructions, hey. šŸ˜Ž

I do say often that I’m an ā€˜opportunist’ when capturing social media content - but this takes the cake. šŸ¤¦ā€ā™€ļø

It’s been crazy watching the numbers. And exciting…

Plus so many people were full of the wow factor like me. (When it got wheeled for a close up view for me to film, wow! )

And a plug for with the beaming new owner of said fish! Hello, Damien! (I learned his name from one or two of the loads and loads of comments.)

Boat envy galore too, and all the (incorrect!) outrage legalities. It is legal! All the right licenses and tags etc, in case you’re wondering.

I’ve bonded with the boat builders who can vouch for their incredible boat, complete with refrigeration, and the awesome skipper who landed said controversial fish.

Don’t forget to tag and leave a comment for foodie reviewer legend - who generously shared my post to his 110,000 followers giving a super leg up. šŸ˜ŽšŸ«¶

I DIY’d it on TikTok and have now had a crazy amount of shares for my barely existing account at - showing proof is in the content itself.

So, takeaways (not fish and chips) ….

Yes, hooks matter (pun absolutely intended) and so do many of the ā€œhow to’sā€ out there.

A dash of controversy keeps it interesting!

Yes, music choice, editing and timing is important.

ā€¼ļøHowever, this is proof that good story telling gets engagement…. Whatever your follower count.

I usually achieve a very high ratio for my clients and keep a true audience highly engaged…

But these numbers are a first for me. 70,000 was the previous high on one of my own accounts on two platforms.

I’m usually a shrinking violet on Jaeger Communications - ironic, I know.

I'm giving a helping (socials) hand to some caring hearts at the Heartbeat Epworth Inc team. So grateful to give back after all they do and have done for my darling partner. What an insight! 🄰

The people behind some big dollars - and what that really means. You’re looking at an amazing group of volunteers who have helped raise $60,000, alongside generous donations from our members, this year alone.

Grateful former Epworth cardiac patients supporting Heartbeat at Epworth Richmond. These are the people who quietly, consistently, put in the work. Fundraising, organising, showing up, visiting cardiac patients.

Our target is $100,000. We’ve pledged that amount towards upgrading the cardiac patient monitoring system on Ward Cato 3 at Epworth Richmond, the dedicated cardiac inpatient ward.

That’s this year’s goal. We have many years and fundraising experience behind us.

The 7 figure kind.

And yes, they are big numbers. Really big.

But what happens to those numbers? … they don’t just sit.

They turn into equipment. They turn into opportunities. They turn into knowledge.

They turn into scholarships that send nurses and medical staff out into the world to learn from international leaders… and then bring that knowledge straight back to their colleagues and patient bedsides.

From a patient and family perspective… that matters more than can properly be put into words.

Memories are long from the bedside. ICU. Upstairs in the Cato 3 Cardiac Ward. Watching the staff in action. Watching the consistency of care, the skill, the teamwork.

Knowing that if they weren’t doing it right… It’s a huge responsibility.

While full of admiration and gratitude, what you’re understandably not thinking of at the time … is how much of that confidence, that capability, that calm teamwork… is built on years of learning, sharing, growing …and scholarships.

One of the best parts of creating a magazine feature is how excited people are to be included! ā¤ļø .art 🄰

I’m proud to have put together a 12 page feature for about my beautiful backyard Hurstbridge & Surrounds for .

Working with who captures fantastic in action shots and behind the scenes was too much fun!

Hurstbridge Region’s online magazine style stories will be launching in February and I’m so excited.

Sadly this is the last edition of Yarra Magazine in print as they go into hiatus but you can grab a copy in newsagents across Melbourne and mail order directly. They’re popular!
