Warami (hello in the Darug language)

We are proud to be a RAP organisation and so in the closing days of 2021 we stood on Cammeraygal lands and acknowledged our responsibility, and officially launched our Reflect Reconciliation Action Plan.

Our launch celebrated the people of the Cammeraygal and Sydney Harbour Elder, Uncle Mark Merriman, welcomed us to his country. We chose Balls Head Reserve for our launch because the people of this country lit fires here over 40,000 years ago and etched their story. Our launch was celebrated with a smoking ceremony and storytelling, and on the anniversary of Prime Minister Paul Keatings’ Redfern speech in 1992, acknowledged that Aboriginal peoples have shaped our knowledge of this continent and of ourselves. They have shaped our identity.

Our steps to reconciliation have also included the creation of our Berriwerri working group, a name we have adopted from the Darug language meaning ‘crossing place’. Berriwerri is a place to actively learn and work to achieve goals to further reconciliation. Berriwerri is joined by Mike Murri Butler, storyteller, truth-teller and cultural representative. Mike designed a cultural awareness programme for McNair yellowSquares staff. Through Mike’s programme we are learning to listen, or in Darug ‘ngarangun’, meaning we learn, think and listen together. Our journey to reconciliation recognizes the need for Aboriginal voices to speak out their experience and opinions, to be heard. Our journey acknowledges the truth about Australian history and the ongoing impact for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples today.

McNair yellowSquares is pleased to announce the development of our new Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) which has recently been endorsed by Reconciliation Australia.

McNair yellowSquares' RAP outlines the actions we will take to contribute to reconciliation, with actions to develop respectful relationships and create meaningful opportunities with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

We have chosen today, 12 October, to share this news, as today is the anniversary of the First Sea of Hands. On this day, in 1997, a Sea of Hands, in the colours of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags, was installed in front of Parliament House in Canberra. Each hand carried a signature, a statement of support for native title and reconciliation.

2021 marks the 20th year of both Reconciliation Australia and McNair yellowSquares. We are choosing to celebrate through music this National Reconciliation Week. The theme for the week is “More than a word. Reconciliation takes action”. Our actions for the week will be to actively listen and experience Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ music in celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples histories, cultures and futures.

In our 20 years’ evolution McNair yellowSquares have learned and grown, innovated, discovered, uncovered and broadened our experience. We have asked questions about health and farming and migrating and government services. We have listened to people in their homes, at workplaces, in schools, on ferries, on the phone, online, in groups and one-on-one. We have reached into remote communities, regional towns, capital cities and into every state and territory. We have analysed and provided data, presented it in graphs, tables, spreadsheets, infographics and dashboards. We are a story of Australia, of growth and change, and needs and policy. We are the voice of Australians with a diversity of interests, beliefs, backgrounds and behaviours. We are a professional research service reaching out to Australians to find out what they think, feel and experience. We are McNair yellowSquares.

The company was first registered and envisaged by Matt Balogh in April 2001 and was joined by Ian McNair in 2003. We still bear the McNair name, a name synonymous with the first registered research business in Australia. In 2017 we joined forces with yellowSquares, founded in 2003 by Chris Mawn and Gillian Milne. McNair yellowSquares, now led by directors Angela Brooks, Saskia Kirson, Chris Mawn and Gillian Milne, continues to combine tested research methods with innovative technology to enable solutions to every research requirement. This is combined with quality management that is consistent with the international ISO20252:2019 standard. McNair extend thanks to our clients, our suppliers, colleagues and staff who have provided support throughout the years. In particular, McNair yellowSquares acknowledge the contribution of our company's founders, Matt Balogh and Ian McNair, and are thankful for their foundation, stewardship and vision.

“It’s people that are being celebrated today, the people we are and the people we survey” says Managing Director, Angela Brooks “It is our vision that McNair yellowSquares will continue to sustain research excellence, embracing the challenges and changes ahead.”

This NAIDOC Week, we at McNair are learning some words of the Dharug nation.

We are learning language to show our respect for the many clans of the Dharug nation, the traditional custodians of the land on which our company is located. We are learning words to express recognition of a culture that always was and always will be. National NAIDOC
