Who would have thought that photographing canned beer would be so fun, but that's what we had 😀

Not long ago, I had the great pleasure of photographing a range of beers for State of the Hops. The range included legendary favourites, fun fruity flavours, and lots of non/low alcoholic options. Working with hard light, real ice. and playing with lots of funky, bold colours, it'll forever be a shoot to remember.

The classic lighting technique that works every time!!

I've been capturing food for years and I still remember conjuring up crazy ideas to get the most exciting and engaging shot. As I've worked throughout the years with different projects, I've also learned to tune into appropriate energy and refine my technical abilities to achieve effective, simplistic food photos. Whether that be bringing out the naturally vibrant, rich red pasta sauce or releasing the golden-yellow yolk, some of my personal favourites are just shots that really let the food shine.

What are your thoughts on HARD LIGHT?

I love using hard light! I used to be so opposed to it, thinking it was unnatural and made food look off putting. But then it occurred to me, "What could be unnatural about a bright, beautiful sun hitting a plate of food?" That to me is something special and so appealing. When done correctly, sunlight will enhance food, not blow it out.

I also love seeing hard light effects on product photography, but I prefer the style used in context over aesthetics only.

Which breakfast is your favourite? I personally love Slide 4, seeing berry-drenched pancakes on a delicious red backdrop.

Two Light set up with Hard & Soft light ☀️

Looking back on the BTS footage taken of this photo, I realised that it hadn't occurred to me at the time that I had used a 500 watt strobe for the fill and a 100 watt strobe as the key. In my mind, I would normally use the strongest light as the key and the second to fill. Whatever the arrangement, the results were 🔥

No such thing as too close 🥐

Food macros are some of my favourite shots! Our eyes can only see so close, so it's always a fascination for me when I see macro shot of food. Pastries in particular are so interesting to me, because a well-done pastry has SO MANY LAYERS that it's almost a crime not to capture.

Which one is your favourite shot? Mine is definitely the first one 😁

Ever wondered how to get that rich, dark & moody look for high-end food?

We took over 500° Steakhouse to bring out the boldest textures and richest tones in their menu. Here’s how we lit this shoot:

Background / Ambient: Profoto D30 + Profoto L Umbrella for a soft, controlled drop-off.
Key Accent: Profoto A2 + Octa 60cm Clic Softbox for those crisp, glossy highlights on the steaks, fresh lemon squeezes, and caviar.

From massive glazed BBQ ribs to steak & caviar served on oyster shells paired with Howard Park Margaret River Chardonnay, this menu made our job easy.

Of all the things I look for when it comes to capturing good food photography, texture is the most critical, and good texture is not always something that is available when it comes to food. So when I get given a dish to photograph and I can see crispy skin, soft meats, rich glistening sauces and freshly blanched greens, I know it's going to be a great photoshoot and I'll always do my best do the plates and their creators justice 🔥

The breakfast that hits 🔥

I’ve been capturing food, restaurants and hotels for a long time, and nothing excited me more than a simple spread shot with lots of offerings. For this Australian continental breakfast, I had the awesome job of making sure the Aussie staples are highlighted well, including coffee, tea, pastries, breads, spreads, cereals and yoghurts.

For this shoot, I used three lights. Two lights may have been sufficient, but having the extra Profoto A2 as an additional backlight came in handy even if just in a subtle way. The Profoto D30 was my keylight, which also acted as a model light. The Profoto B10 plus stood behind me, used as a bounce off from the low-hanging white ceiling above.

Would you ever use a Mirror as a prop for food & drink photography?

Of course you would, and if you haven't then you should!

Before using a mirror for food photography, I had occasionally dabbled with it whenever the opportunity came up. The problem, however, is that I rarely encountered a mirror wherever I worked, so there was hardly any opportunities. That is, until, I decided to bring my own. Using the mirror allows me to capture a side to food (and drink) that I would never be able to, literally. It also has reminded me to continue to search outside the box when it comes to creativity. In fact, perhaps it's time to pull out the smoke machine again 😀

In a world where there is always something new and improved on the market, I wanted to highlight some of the tried and true, reliable products I've been bringing along to almost every shoot and project, some since 2019!

1. The Macbook Pro with the M1 chip. I got this when it first came out in 2020 and it's still going strong.
2. iPad Pro 5th Gen. Got this in 2021 and still great!
3. Canon EOS R5 (first generation), the best camera I've used for photography.
4. Sirui tripod: W-2204 + HA-77 combo. I got this tripod in my first years of photography in 2018/19. It's had a bit of wear and tear over the years, however only superficial and is still a beast!
5/6. Canon RF 100mm f/2.8L Macro lens and Canon RF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM lens. I use these pretty much exclusivity and interchangeable for a majority of my work. While they both have similar focal lengths they serve different functions.
7. Profoto B10plus + 2x3 & umbrella. While the L umbrella was a recent purchase, I started off with an S umbrella and a 2x3 softbox. Both modifiers are still excellent sub ins for my work today!
