💥 Newsflash 💥 Facebook is doing away with public, closed or secret Group types. Instead, Groups will simply be either 'PUBLIC' or 'PRIVATE.' 🌎🔒

The new defaults will be:

🔹 A group that was formerly “secret” will now be “private” and “hidden.”

🔹 A group that was formerly “closed” will now be “private” and “visible.”

🔹 Groups that are “public” will remain “public” and “visible.”

With two clear options, this new privacy model is much more intuitive. Public groups allow anyone to see who’s in the group and everything that’s shared there. With private groups, only members can see who else is in the group and what they’ve posted.

Admins can find the new controls in their Group Settings. Just as it is today, there are restrictions to if and when an admin can change the privacy setting of a group. Group members are always notified when an admin updates the group’s privacy setting.

See the official announcement here:

Remember, Zuck has been saying all year now, "THE FUTURE IS PRIVATE." Hmm. 🤔

Now, Groups are either the town square (public) or the living room (private).

I believe this simplification of group types is a good move to create more clarity. What do you think?

You can now upload to Instagram from the desktop.

The Facebook Creator Studio now allows you to upload IGTV or Instagam posts from the desktop.

Go to https://business.facebook.com/creatorstudio (or Google "Facebook creator studio") to log in as your Facebook account. Then connect your Instagram account.

Next go to the Instagam tab to view your content library and all of your posts, including your Stories.

In the top left corner there is a "Create Post" button. Click and select Instagram or IGTV (Stories is not an option). Upload your photo(s) and/or video(s) to the content box, write your caption, and even add a location.
Then publish to Instagram!

A lot of changes, some new features and functionality rolling out across Facebook and Instagram from now and into the next week

The FTC has ordered Facebook to create new layers of oversight for its collection and handling of users’ personal data. Excellent news for us!! 📢📰

In addition to the $5 Billion fine for privacy violations, the FTC mandated Facebook create an independently appointed privacy committee on its board; designate compliance officers to oversee a privacy program; undergo regular privacy audits that Mark Zuckerberg and others must submit to; and appoint an outside assessor to monitor the handling of data.

🤔 Zuckerberg says it may take the company longer to create new products because of going through this procedure each time.

This is all really good news for us users. 👏🏻

Definitely look out for continued developments on private messaging inside Facebook Messenger, Instagram direct and WhatsApp. 📲

Plus, watch for continued growth of the Stories format.

Facebook and Instagram have both tested a merged News Feed and Stories, with horizontal tap/swipe navigation. It may be that the current horizontal scrolling News Feed will morph some day.

Also, Facebook plans to roll out desktop Messenger apps very soon, for both Mac and Windows. Asha Sharma, head of Messenger, shared at Facebook's F8 conference this year that the company is creating "a modern day social network built around Messaging."

Remember, Facebook is also working on the interoperability of the three combined messaging functions: Messenger + WhatsApp + Instagram Direct.

👉🏻 We've only seen the tip of the iceberg in terms of major development on the Facebook family of messaging apps.

Meanwhile, in other news later today Facebook will report its Q2 earnings. Anyone can tune in to the live webcast at 2pm PST / 5pm EST here: https://investor.fb.com/investor-events/default.aspx 📈☎️

Plus, to round out the day, this is the day that Netflix releases 'The Great Hack,' its documentary on the Cambridge Analytica data breach scandal!! 🎞📺https://www.netflix.com/title/80117542

Let's see what happens to the $FB stock price by EOD. 😜

Do you think the FTC's fine and mandate are sufficient? Now that Facebook is being held to a higher standard of data handling and privacy protection, will the company's trust and reputation rise? Or, are users still vulnerable? Hmm. 🤔

From today Australian Instagram users will no longer see the number of 'likes' an Instagram post receives, in a major shakeup announced by the social media giant.

Aussie users will now notice that posts will show a user name "and others like this" below a post instead of the number of likes

Like it or not, it comes into effect this morning.
