Five FULL days of shooting, running, laughing, chasing light, chasing talent… and two full days later and we’re still sifting, editing, captioning, refining, posting… supplying print and news media… and honestly just reliving festival moments all over again. I didn’t get to go on the JetSki this year- the surf was absolutely pumping so even if we were allowed, James or Ed were going to take that task for the team!

Huge shoutout to our incredible media team who absolutely sent it behind the lens. Long days, tired feet, full memory cards and a whole lot of passion. For people who don’t usually step out from behind the lens, we actually have a fair few media snaps this time around, I guess because Tall Paul loves a good (tall) selfie and has a knock for sneaky shots;)

Somewhere along the way, words like huzzah, rippin’, gnarly shredding and sending it have firmly entered our vocab… and my kids have already decided they’re ‘hundo percent entering next year’. They’ve since helped sift through results and footage as they remembered each and every surfer and skater - which is coming in very handy collating the results with the content for each post.

There’s something about the Ride the Wave crew… the athletes, the judges, the announcer , the comp directors, the volunteers… It’s the vibe of the thing really. Laid back, welcoming, just a really good crew to be around. Thanks for having us Erin and Rob 💛

More to come… still digging through the gold that is RTW!
- I am determined to find a pic of you!

Towards the end of last year, I hit a point I hadn’t felt before. We were doing work I knew we were good at, with people I cared about, but I was constantly tired. Not the usual lead-up-to-christmas tired. The deep kind where your brain feels foggy, your creativity dries up, and even the work you once loved feels like a grind. The first half of the year was massive, with success at award ceremonies, nailing our work at awesome events, and bringing on new staff with business growth on the horizon - then one month changed everything and it was a slippery slope from there. Being seen as a nice-to-have service in a regional town during a sh*tty economy, it’s hard to future plan a budget that can remain consistent. Especially when the digital marketing industry is often misunderstood and undervalued.

With help from my unpaid mental health professionals (aka close friends and ChatGPT) I realised it wasn’t a loss of passion, but a reminder that energy needs to be protected if you want to keep doing good work well. I’m feeling validated with a side of relief when finding out that other business owners were in the same (slowly sinking) boat. Local business networking events have opened up more conversations to help me understand that it’s not just me.

2025 was a big lesson. That burnout isn’t a badge of honour. That going above and beyond isn’t appreciated by everyone as some people will take it for granted. And being treated like this doesn’t pay the bills. Not every opportunity is meant to be taken. And that boundaries aren’t about saying no to people, but about saying yes to longevity. I’m a self confessed people pleaser, so this is really hard for me.

But don’t panic. We survived and we’re still here. Still showing up. Our small but mighty team are creating thoughtful, engaging digital marketing we’re proud of. But we’re being far more intentional about who and what we give our energy to. Which we know will result in even better work for our legend clients.

Has anyone else reached this point too?

*this isn’t meant to be one of those needy Facebook status updates where I want people to DM ‘are you ok hun?’. I’m genuinely keen to hear your experience.

Where do I start?

If you want to promote your new business, whether it’s a side hustle or the real deal, there’s a time when you sit down and think.. where do I actually start? Logo, colours, tagline... do you need to sharpen up the ‘ol 5 year business plan? Have you got your business name registered? Does it lend itself to what you do? What do you start with, facebook, website, business cards, business coach, accountant - there’s a few things to think about.

Well, after working for startups in various project, communications and marketing roles, and for traditional and digital agencies, I can safely say I have definitely helped other small businesses take the plunge. I’ve come to the realisation that the ‘helping’ is the bit I absolutely love - helping people do what they love and learning their craft while I’m there.

So, I’m now taking a big (giant) deep breath and launching my brand into the abyss and hoping to hook a few more loyal clients in. So, yes, now is the time to take my own advice and just DO IT. Go for it, you can refine later, I used to say. Sounds easy right?! Ah, I curse my own advice, but future Emma will (hopefully) be rolling in cash and chuckling! Steve Jobs didn’t sit back and wait for the right time now did he?! So I’m doing it. And here I am. Join me on my own small business journey and the humps and bumps along the way...
