Australia Day, observed each year on 26 January, is more than a public holiday.
It reflects a long, complex, and evolving story of people, culture, and nationhood.
On this day in 1788, the First Fleet arrived at Sydney Cove, marking the beginning of British settlement in Australia. Over time, 26 January came to be recognised as the foundation of modern Australia and was officially named Australia Day in 1935.
Yet for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples - whose cultures and histories span over 65,000 years — this date carries a very different meaning. For many First Nations communities, it is a reminder of loss, dispossession, and survival. It is why the day is also known by some as Invasion Day or Survival Day - recognising strength, resilience, and continuity.
Today, Australia Day is increasingly understood as a time to reflect, acknowledge, and engage in meaningful dialogue.
Across the country, it is marked by:
• Citizenship ceremonies welcoming new Australians
• Community gatherings and shared celebrations
• Recognition of outstanding contributions through the Australian of the Year Awards
• Growing respect for Indigenous culture, history, and voices
It is a day that speaks to Australia’s diversity — a nation shaped by many cultures, stories, and journeys, all calling this land home.
This morning, Sydney chose to tell that story quietly and thoughtfully — not by denying complexity, not by avoiding truth, but by allowing different histories and perspectives to coexist.
And perhaps, that is Sydney at its most honest and most beautiful.
At Visit Sydney, we believe that truly understanding a destination begins with context — its people, its history, and the moments that shape its identity beyond landmarks.
Happy Australia Day 🇦🇺
