For years, businesses tried to beat Google.
Better backlinks. More keywords. More optimisation tricks.
That playbook isn’t just fading fast, it’s gone. You might as well stuff a page with keywords and make the text white again.
Google is now better at identifying real businesses, real expertise, and genuine activity than most people realise.
With that in mind, here’s what I’d prioritise in 2026:
1. Document your work - every job, consistently
Show the real work being done. Projects, jobs, outcomes, before and afters.
2. Show the people behind the business
Real businesses have real people. Put faces, experience, and expertise on display.
3. Stop managing reviews toward perfection
Perfect review profiles often look manufactured. Authentic feedback builds more trust.
4. Generate real-world activity that leaves a digital trail
Partnerships, mentions, community involvement, media coverage - these signals matter.
5. Lock down your business identity everywhere
Consistency across websites, directories, platforms, and citations helps machines connect the dots.
6. Anchor your entity in trusted registries
Industry bodies, government listings, and respected organisations reinforce legitimacy.
Search is shifting toward verifying real-world businesses rather than rewarding technical optimisation.
I’ve written a full breakdown of what this means and how businesses should respond.
