My fellow citizens,
Starting from July, I have stood for the politics of resistance to Fascism, reconstruction, the rule of law, and reconciliation. This was the political line of Shaheed Osman Hadi, and I remain unwavering in my commitment to carry it forward. I categorically reject any attempt at violence and anarchy in the name of July or Patriotism. I will neither legitimize it nor surrender to it.
Let me state this unequivocally: my speech at Shaheed Minar was a clear and direct condemnation of the terrorists who killed Osman Hadi and who continue to issue threats against our lives. At the same time, that speech reaffirmed—without ambiguity—my firm and principled commitment to reconstruction, not destruction.
From the first days of July to today’s gathering at Shahbagh, I have consistently raised my voice for constructive politics, freedom with accountability, and compassion rooted in our shared humanity. My position has been clear, consistent, and unwavering. Resistance to Fascism requires better alternatives, such as a rule-based society and strong democratic institutions.
However, it is unfortunate that my remark at Shahid Minar was misinterpreted, contrary to my genuine intention. It was out of a spontaneous outpouring of feelings and figurative, to say the least. I sincerely express my regret to every conscious citizen who was disheartened by my remark that day.
I warn the people of Bangladesh: do not be trapped. Certain far-right groups are actively working to destabilize the country through destructive and anarchic politics. I urge all patriotic and democratic forces to draw a clear line different from old political settlements, violent traditions, and failed political practices. New Political settlement requires a constructive Political Culture.
To save Bangladesh, the rise of extreme far-right politics must be prevented. This is an urgent national responsibility. I firmly stand by my political ethics of dayy, dorod, morjada o gôthon—responsibility, empathy, dignity, and the building of strong democratic institutions.
I strongly and unequivocally condemn the heinous attacks on The Daily Star, Prothom Alo, and other cultural institutions, including diplomatic establishments. I also condemn the targeted attacks and incitement against our respected comrade Nurul Kabir, among others, a principled and courageous voice of the democratic struggle.
Our path forward is Clear. We will honor the legacy of Shaheed Osman Hadi not through chaos, but through resistance, reconstruction and democratic transformation through a free and fair election. Our cultural and intellectual struggle against fascism and its allies, that Shaheed Osman Hadi left unfinished, will continue, Insha Allah.
I sincerely urge the government bodies and law enforcement agencies to remain vigilant and act accordingly to restore peace and stability. I request all my fellow citizens to remain calm, vigilant and act responsibly in this critical time for Bangladesh.
May Allah grant Shaheed Osman Hadi - ওসমান হাদি in the highest place in Jannat.
