Today, we celebrate the International Mother Language Day, a day to honor the diversity and richness of languages and cultures around the world. But for us, the people of Bangladesh, this day also holds a special significance. It is the day when we pay tribute to the brave language martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the recognition of our mother tongue, Bangla, in 1952.
On this day, 72 years ago, a group of students and activists defied the oppressive regime of Pakistan and took to the streets to demand their linguistic rights. They faced bullets and batons, but they did not give up. They raised their voices for the dignity and identity of their nation. They inspired a movement that eventually led to the liberation of Bangladesh in 1971.
We are proud of our language martyrs, who are the symbols of our courage and resilience. We are grateful to them for giving us the freedom to speak, write, and learn in our own language. We are committed to preserving and promoting our linguistic heritage, as well as respecting and supporting the languages of other communities.
On this International Mother Language Day, let us remember the sacrifices of our language martyrs, and celebrate the beauty and diversity of languages. Let us also pledge to uphold the values of peace, tolerance, and harmony that they fought for. Let us make our mother tongue, Bangla, a source of pride and inspiration for generations to come.
