The Urvich fortress was built in the 13th century durign the reign of Tsar Ivan Shishman. It was undoubtedly very difficult to conquer it since it has been surrounded by the river Iskar on three sides and covering an area of 350 by 150 metres. Unfortunately the only remains of the fortress are the foundations of a watchman tower and St. Iliya church. The walls of the watchman tower are 7-8 metres high and 1.2 metres thick 🏰 The fortress played a key role during the battles of Tsar Ivan Shishman with the Ottoman empire because in order to reach Sofia, the Ottomans had to conquer Urvich. The legend has it that Ottoman attacks have been unsuccessful and the soldiers in the fortress used a hidden gate to obtain fresh water. One day the Ottoman commander captured a woman from a nearby village and threatened to kill her baby if she did not cooperate to find the secret etrance to the fortress. The woman sworn to never betray her people, disclosed the location in order to save her child and then the Ottomans managed to conquer and completely destroy Urvich by surprising the defending side 🕯️

Apart from the church the monastery, includes two residential buildings, two chapels, a farmyard and a bell tower which was built in 2000 🔔 The cloister is surrounded by a thick two-meter high wall. Reaching the remote monastery is extremely challenging but it is good enough for a day trip since it's located on the outskirts of Sofia 🗺️

The Kokalyane Monastery was built during the Second Bulgarian State at the beginning of the 11th century during Tsar Samuil's Rule. It was set on fire twice during the Ottoman rule and was fully restored after the liberation in 1896 ⛪

The pantheon is constructed of red concrete and has a form of a truncated pyramid with an area of ​​700 square meters and a height of 20 meters. In its center is erected a statue of a woman symbolising Mother Bulgaria, grieving for her lost children 🇧🇬

The Gurgulyat Pantheon was built in memory of the fallen soldiers and officers from the Bulgarian army as well as local residents who helped the army in the Battle of Gurgulyat. It was a key event during the Serbo-Bulgarian War in 1885. The monument was built a century later to mark the 100th anniversary of the unification of Bulgaria 🇧🇬

Harvest season 🌽 - Once the combine harvests the corn it has to offload it to auxiliary vehicles such as lorries and 🚜 with trailers which will bring the harvest back to base. It takes roughly 50 second to empty the 3 tonne tank of the combine harvester and complete the offloading process and then the process starts all over again 🔄 A vital piece of equipment is the GAZ 53 which you can see in the photos. It is a petrol powered 🚛 produced between 1961 and 1993. It features a 4.3L V8 engine producing 120 bhp with a top speed of 90km/h. This lorry is also known as the Madara 400 because the KTA Madara factory in Shumen, Bulgaria had a production licence. This particular 🚛 had its engine swapped due to the awful fuel economy of the V8 petrol engine. It has been fitted with the 3.9L and extremely reliable diesel engine by Perkins which has been produced by the Vasil Kolarov engine plant in Varna, Bulgaria. Not only that but the seats have also been swapped (for first generation Ford Focus seats) to improve driver comfort. As you can see this piece of machinery is still doing what it's made for in 2020 ⚙️ Check what type of route it takes to bring back the corn harvest back to HQ 👉
