The Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide), 8th Edition will be officially released on January 13, 2026. Expanding to about 416 pages (that’s roughly 200 pages more than the 7th Edition) this update is expected to be the most comprehensive and community-driven version yet. It draws on nearly 48,000 data points, global practitioner insights, and two rounds of public review, making it highly evidence-based and relevant across industries.
The new edition is expected to introduce major changes, reducing the traditional project management processes from 49 to 40 while blending a process-oriented structure with the principle-based approach of the PMBOK 7th Edition. Several knowledge areas will be removed or merged, and the guide will incorporate emerging topics such as artificial intelligence, project management offices (PMOs), and procurement to ensure it remains aligned with today’s professional landscape. It will also provide clearer definitions of foundational terms, streamline the framework into six practical principles, reimagine Process Groups as five Focus Areas, and integrate modern ways of working into seven Project Performance Domains supported by the updated processes.
PMI members will benefit from free access to the electronic PDF version. The PMP exam is expected to be updated shortly afterward to reflect the new guide. For those preparing to write the exam, it is strongly advised to begin studying now and sit for it, as delaying could mean facing a more complex exam once the 8th Edition takes effect.
