France is transforming thousands of large parking lots with solar canopies, turning unused pavement into clean energy generators while reducing vehicle temperatures during heatwaves.
Studies suggest covering major parking areas with solar panels could produce electricity comparable to the output of around 10 large nuclear reactors, while providing shade that lowers cabin temperatures by 20–30°C (36–54°F) on hot summer days. Researchers estimate the United States has more than 800 million uncovered parking spaces, representing one of the world's largest untapped solar resources.
The concept allows cities to generate renewable electricity without using additional farmland or forests.
Should every large parking lot be covered with solar panels?
