BIOGRAPHY –H.H. Jewoen Rinpoche

EARLY LIFE & EDUCATION

In the divine valley of Tokaphu Lämai Gonpa, His Holiness Jewoen Rinpoche was born in the year 1983 to the family of Yab Tshering Gyeltshen and Yüm Dechok. Located in the Tongzhang under Trashi Yangtse, Tokaphu is the birthplace of His Holiness Namkhai Nyingpo Rinpoche and various other Läms.

At an early age, Rinpoche was well-educated in reading and writing by his paternal grandfather Gonpo. Following that, Rinpoche began his modern education at Tokaphu Community Primary School based nearby the village. Rinpoche also studied at Tongmijangsa Primary School, which is a few kilometers away from his birthplace. In 1997, Rinpoche graduated class six there, class 8 from Tsenkharla School, class 10 from Trashi Yangtse Middle Secondary School, and Class 12 from Gongzim Ugyen Dorji High School, Haa in the year 2003.

In 2007, Rinpoche graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree from North Point (NP) in Darjeeling, India. However, under the spiritual direction of his brother, H.H. Namkhai Nyingpo Rinpoche, H.E. served Kharchu Monastery in Bumthang for more than a year before Rinpoche was recognized as a reincarnation of Jewoen Rinpoche.

RECOGNITION

The recognition came as surprise to Rinpoche’s parents, relatives, the locals, and Rinpoche himself. In 2008, Rinpoche was recognized as the Throne Holder of Lhodrak Nyidey Gonpa in Tibet. H.H. Tai Situ Rinpoche has written a recognition letter with the names of the parents, recognizing him as an unmistakable reincarnate Trulku of previous Jewoen Rinpoche. Later in 2009 coinciding with the first day of the first month of the lunar calendar, an inaugural ceremony was held at Thragu Tashi Choeling Goenpa, Varanasi, India. Thus, Rinpoche was recognized and ordained officially by H.H. Thragu Rinpoche. Rinpoche is one of the throne holders in the Karma Kagyu sect of Buddhism.

Later Rinpoche’s inaugural ceremony was held in the monastery in Bjemina, Thimphu. That was an exciting moment for the devotees there. The Läm, monks, devotees and the general public jointly welcomed Rinpoche in a grand ceremonial procession to the monastery. The organizers had well-organized the inaugural ceremony which was elevating and welcoming as well.

EDUCATION: POST RECOGNITION

Rinpoche was well-educated in modern education. As a reincarnate Trulku, Rinpoche found that it is necessary to learn, receive and realize Buddhist philosophies as well. Rinpoche studied for a year at Lhodrak Kharchu Monastery in Bumthang. The following year, Rinpoche joined Palpung Sherabling Monastery, Himachal, India, and studied under the guidance of H.H. Tai Situ Rinpoche for a year. Rinpoche is also a student of H.H. Sangye Nyenpa Rinpoche, Gyaltshab Rinpoche, Bokar Khenchen Lodro Donyoe, and Thragu Rinpoche.

Similarly, Rinpoche also approached his brother H.H. Namkhai Nyingpo Rinpoche for infinite empowerment and oral transmissions. Rinpoche bestowed Longchen Dzoed Duen, Nyelsok Korsum, Rangdol Korsum, Muensel Korsum, Ngagyur K**a, Jigling Kabum, Mipham Kabum, and others.

WHO ESTABLISHED THE MONASTERY

Lhodrak Nyidey Monastery in Tibet was established by H.H. the Fifth Karmapa Dezhin Shekpa while Rinpoche was on a pilgrimage to Lhodrak. Later, H.H. Fourth Shamar Rinpoche did the revamp and handed it over to H.H. Detsa Rinpoche who was an uncle of the Jewoen Rinpoche.

After the demise of Detsa Rinpoche, the monastery was under the care of the first Jewoen Rinpoche, thereby, Lhodrak Nyidey monastery became a permanent seat of Rinpoche. This propensity continued to pass down to his unbroken chain of successive reincarnations. Each reincarnation has selflessly expanded the monastery over the period, making it, one of the major Karma Kagyu Monasteries. Thus, it facilitated in upholding of the Karma Kagyu sect of Buddhism until Tibetan-Chinese socio-economic-cultural revolution began in the late 1950s.

During those unprecedented times, the monastery suffered major devastation. Rinpoche (previous incarnation), however, did not flee the rebellion leaving behind the dear motherland and beloved monastery. Rinpoche later passed away, after which, the present Rinpoche was reincarnated in the land of the Thunder Dragon, for the sake of Rinpoche’s limitless devotees from across the world. His Holiness Choktrul Jewoen Rinpoche resides in the second seat founded by Rinpoche’s Umze from his previous life at Bjemina, Thimphu.

PRESENT MONASTERY & MAKEOVER

Nyidey Monastery in Bjemina is in the course of transformation amid the great economic recession, today. The new hostels are coming up to lodge sn*******ng numbers of monks for the sake of flourishing Buddha-dharma in the country and the world as a whole. The monastery currently houses more than 70 monks including Rinpoche, Khenpos, and lopens.

Located 21 kilometers to the south of the capital city, Nyidey Monastery stands stunning on the hill above Bjemina village. Nestled in the pinewoods, the monastery is adorned with monks and aged souls. The beautiful villages, industrial estates, and schools dotted around, apple orchards, and farmlands add splendor to the vicinity. Monastery has access to the motorable road that connects Khasadrapchu town.

If you haven’t been there, do visit and rejuvenate the frantic you were submerged in for a week. Acquire spiritual sanctions that would eliminate the spiteful feat and clear future obstacles.

Master Painter Lhadrip Ugyen Lhuendrup passes away

As per the various sources, a revered Master Painter, Lhadrip Ugyen Lhuendrup left this mundane world on the Fifteenth day of the Seventh month of the lunar calendar. Master Painter had left his loving body at around 6 pm at Jigme Dorji Wangchuck National Referral Hospital, Thimphu.

A recipient of the Druk Thuksey Medal, Lhadrip Ugyen Lhuendrup has proven to be one of the finest painters in the country. His Majesty the Fourth King has awarded the medal in 1999 upon recognition of his great painting works. He was a painter since 1952 spanning over six decades as a painter in the country and overseas.

I heard about him for a long time, and I had seen his paintings too. However, I haven't had a chance to meet him personally. I have listened to his advice on the National TV channel a few months ago, the 'Pha Gye Pai Tam'. Whatever he shared touched me a lot. It is the source of inspiration to me and of course to many of you.

The sources say that he is one of the great painters in the country and has been recognized by various Masters over the last several decades. And in Pha Gye Pai Tam, he shared all about himself. The following is the list of Masters who have recognized him for his Artworks and received numerous empowerments from various masters as follows:
1. His Holiness Lama Sonam Zangpo,
2. His Holiness Dudjom Rinpoche,
3. His Holiness Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche,
4. His Holiness Jadrel Rinpoche,
5. His Holiness Penor Rinpoche,
6. His Holiness Dungsey Thinley Norbu Rinpoche,
7. His Holiness Dodrupchen Rinpoche, and many more

A few months ago, I met a man who met Lhadrip Ughen Lhuendrup privately and has many things to share. He has shared with me the following inspiring lines:
1. Many great masters refused to consecrate painting works.
2. Many great masters had prophesied that his paintings would speak one day.
3. He is gifted with an eye on his Thump.

On one of the occasions His Holiness Dudjom Rinpoche confessed to his disciples that “If the painting is done by Ugyen Lhendrup himself, there isn’t need of any consecration from any lamas”. That's how many masters refused to consecrate the parenting works.

His painting works are widely seen in temples and dzongs around the country. He stays in Thimphu and spends his retirement age in contemplation before peacefully passes away.

May your departed soul rest in eternal peace and take swift rebirth sooner than later.

What if My Guru Asks Me for S*x?

As the purpose of this book is to ask questions and consider how they might be addressed from as many different angles as possible, ask yourself, what would you do if your guru asked you for s*x?

Over the years, I have noticed how unfairly we judge both male and female students who express a s*xual interest in a lama. Gurus are regularly approached for s*x directly, suggestively, provocatively or flirtatiously, in letters, on social media, or even in videos.

Whatever the route, the student is generally condemned as being mad, not just by the lama but also by the lama’s attendants and the entire sangha – mad, mentally unbalanced, crazy and possibly s*x-starved.

Yet, when the guru expresses a s*xual interest in a student, the sangha’s reaction is quite different. The guru is not condemned as being crazy or s*x-starved, far from it. His s*xual interest is, in fact, a shower of blessings. What an honour for the fortunate object of his desire!

This is very unfair. Students should be able to express themselves honestly to the guru, and the guru should be courageous and compassionate enough to deal with anything a student has to say to him. As far as the Vajrayana is concerned, it is completely unacceptable for women to be stigmatised, shunned, mocked and categorized as crazy just because they make a play for a guru.

What if a homos*xual guru is approached by a woman who wants to have s*x? If the guru is a monk, he can tell her that as a monk he is celibate. If he is not a monk, he should explain to the woman that he is not heteros*xual. Such conversations require both parties to be truthful and honest – and human.

If the homos*xual ta***ic master is good at his job, he knows that to reject the woman’s advances will have consequences. If she were to turn her back on the Dharma as a result of his rejection, the Vajrayana would hold the guru responsible. What should the guru do? All Vajrayana gurus must be able to handle this kind of situation.

Few of today’s gurus even think of emulating the nun Subhā – the Tibetans know her as Utpala – who was so beautiful that a man became inflamed with lust and wouldn’t leave her alone.

Exasperated by his obsessive behaviour, Subhā asked what it was about her that attracted him. Your beautiful eyes, he replied. So she plucked one out and gave it to him. His lust was instantly quenched, and he finally stopped harassing her. And when Subhā next visited the Buddha, her eye was miraculously restored.

An exemplary Bhutanese nun I know had a similar experience. A man was so infatuated with her that he became violently jealous whenever she talked to other men and was devastated when she refused to sleep with him on the grounds that she was a nun. His obvious passion for her cost him his business and his family. Yet they remained friends for life and she was able to introduce him to some very good lamas. How compassionate is that! I have always admired how she dealt with that man. As things turned out, he became her lifetime project.

Some very profound Vajrayana teachings explain how to use s*xual desire and the s*xual act as the path. Quite a few people think this practice can only be done with the guru. It’s not true. It can be done with anyone with the same understanding and appreciation for the path that you have, and the same ultimate goal.

Why do there continue to be so many misconceptions, misinterpretations and speculations about the Vajrayana, ta**ra and s*x? Buddhism does not think of s*x as a ‘sinful’ act. S*xual misconduct is what Buddhists call a ‘non-virtue’.

‘Non-virtue’ has not yet been listed in the OED, but I think translators coined it because ‘sinful’ doesn’t make sense in a Buddhist context. The s*x act itself is neither virtuous nor non-virtuous, but as it arises out of desire and craving, it can easily distract, overpower and entangle us.

S*xual desire may well be the most powerfully numbing of all our desires. It also ties us in complicated knots that are difficult to undo.

Long before Freud suggested that we are motivated by our unconscious desires – for s*x or food or whatever – the Buddha explained that the realm in which we human beings live is known as the ‘realm of desire’. But the point here is, just because an activity has the potential to trigger obsessiveness, it is not automatically ‘non-virtuous’. If it were, eating ice cream would be a non-virtuous activity.

In Mahayana Buddhism, bodhisattvas (those who aim to help others) are forbidden to act motivated by a vicious mind, a harmful mind or a wrong view. Other than that, if an action will save or benefit another sentient being, you are encouraged to do it. As desire is the predominant human emotion, the wisdom of Vajrayana Buddhism includes teachings on how to use emotion as the path.

The teachings on how to use s*x as the path belong to the highest, most glorious and venerated of Vajrayana paths. But remember, no matter which method you use – offering a flower, fasting or the path of s*x – the method must destroy delusion.

If, instead of destroying delusion, an activity creates more delusion, more self-righteousness, more moralistic judgements, and more pride etc., it is an obstacle to awakening. This point is crucially important and must not be overlooked or forgotten.

ZAMTOG CHORTEN

Landlocked by nature, Bhutan is listed as one of the members of the United Nations Organization (UNO) and it endures as an independent country. The Monarchy system of government was instituted in 1907. Ever since the Kingship was instituted, the country’s name and fame had flown over the neighboring countries and to the world.

Every country in the world has its own identity to ensure sovereignty. The identities are national anthem, day, language, games, sports, flag, bird, animal, tree, etc.

Out of which, I will share the significance of our national tree, Tsenden (the Cypress). We have an abundant amount of trees around the country. The cypresses are the beautiful tree that creates the place beautiful.

The tree has religious significance over other trees. It smells good, is used for making incense powder or sticks, used for making shrines or its room, and so on.

The Cypress Tree of Changzamtog is famous for the Cabbies to pick up and drop the passengers, it has become a landmark; it is the place where people can trace the location of particular places around.

Standing nearby the road to the core of Thimphu city, it is tall and seen from afar, is believed to have grown from the walking stick of Lam Drukpa Kuenley, who taught in western parts of the country.

The Bhutanese traditional Stupa (Chorten) was built around the cypress tree. The prayer wheels were installed later. Every day, tens and hundreds of devotees come here to circumambulate the stupa and offer butter lamps. With its religious significance, the place is gaining a reputation over the decades.

When asked the caretaker about the relics and of the Chorten, he shared with me that he is not sure of it. “The history of the Chorten is mysterious, so, I am sure there must be some relics inside. It is believed that Lam who constructed the Chorten was short of relics and retained the top of the Chorten wide open. Today, we consider the Tsenden Shing as its relics,” said the caretaker.

“I was born and brought here, but I haven’t seen or heard any written histories about Tsenden Shing,” said 81 years old Ap Daw, adding that the history is passed down to them orally, which will disappear one day.

Regarding Chorten’s life span, the caretaker says it's unknown. It is said that Divine Madman, who was meditating in Ralung, Tibet, had a vision about the incomplete Chorten in the south of Ralung. In his vision, someone in the south needed help to complete the Chorten.

Then Lam Drukpa Kuenley journeyed to Bhutan from Tibet in the 15th Century with a walking stick. Divine Madman then reaches the place. Worried lam was relieved after Lam Drukpa Kuenley assured him of the relic. Drukpa Kuenley ultimately placed his walking stick into the open Chorten. He told the old lam, not to remove or cover it. From that walking stick, the Tsenden Shing grew up, which is his wisdom power.

Later on, when Tibetans heard about it, they came to the place and tried to cut down trees grown from a walking stick. However, due to the wisdom and power of Divine Madman, no scars are shown on it. “It’s believed to have a religious significance, so, it is important in the place,” the caretaker pronounced smilingly.

The people of the Changzamtog area own the Chorten and they are responsible for it. The name of the Chorten is ‘Zamtog Chorten’, which is derived from the name of the place.

Although the Chorten is older than the tree, the prayer wheels around were installed later on. One of the men from this area installed it in the memory of the departed soul of his son. None of us was aware of such a dynamic place until recently, rather we passes the place many times.

Over the years, this place has been growing in congested new settlements and houses are mounting. The road pass below the tree and shops located nearby attracts people but not the Chorten. The un-spacious space is a major problem for the devotee. It would be good to conduct religious rituals, providing that there is spacious space to pitch the tent around it or build a temple.
