The Goensho Tshamkhang has 13 cottages, and will be able to accommodate up to 78 inhabitants. The retreat has administrative offices, nurse’s office, a common kitchen, and common areas with spaces for prayers and recreation. The facility includes accessible toilets, and is landscaped to allow wheelchair access.

Goensho Tshamkhang will be a place for elderly people who do not have family members to look after them, to live, pray, and receive medical care. A number of such elderly people across the country, have been recipients of His Majesty’s Gensho Zhabto Kidu, in the form of monthly allowances.

However, many of the recipients are unable to care for themselves, or do not have a place to live. Many of the current inhabitants were temporarily accommodated at the Kidu Patient Guest house in Thimphu.

FROM PARO TO BUMTHANG — STRAIGHT TO MY KITCHEN

Today, my kitchen brought two beautiful corners of Bhutan together.

The rice came from Paro (Parop Chum), grown in the clean mountain environment of the valley.

The potatoes came from Bumthang (Bumtap Kewa), nurtured in the cool highlands.

Two places. Two special ingredients. One delicious Bhutanese story.

And when they meet in a pot with our beloved local cheese (Datshi), local spring onion, local dry chili and mustard oil, something magical happens.

This is more than just food. It is a taste of Bhutan, a country blessed with pristine nature and known for being carbon negative.

And yes… there is one more secret ingredient in this meal:

My love for cooking. 😄

I may not be a professional chef, but give me some good Bhutanese ingredients and a kitchen… and I will happily do the rest!

Parop Chum + Bumtap Kewa Datshi = pure Bhutanese happiness.

What Bhutanese dish should I cook next?
