A few reflections from last week’s Women in Mining Pitso, 3 key takeaways that stood out for me:

1-The challenges women face in mining are often overlooked, platforms like this help bring them to light. From subtle biases to systemic barriers, many of the struggles women face go unnoticed. It’s important, especially for men in the industry, to recognize how unconscious biases can blind us to realities outside our own. Awareness is the first step.

2-Diverse teams are good for business!
The data is clear, and speaker shared case studies on companies with gender-diverse teams consistently performing better across all metrics. Inclusion drives innovation, resilience and profitability.

3-We need to tell more success stories to inspire the next generation because representation matters. The more we highlight women thriving in mining and STEM careers, the more young girls can see themselves in these roles. Institutions like New Era College are playing a key role here through initiatives like their annual Women in Engineering celebrations on International Women in Engineering Day and having platforms that spark inspiration!

Some Saturday’s ago, I had the privilege of facilitating a British Parliamentary Debate & Public Speaking Workshop at New Era College and it was amazing!

As someone deeply passionate about the oratory arts, standing before a room full of students hungry to learn, speak, and be heard was super exciting. We unpacked the structure and strategies behind British Parliamentary debating, worked on persuasive communication skills and outlined steps to establish and grow debating clubs across the different institutions that were present at the workshop.

One of the main aims of the workshop was to get students tournament-ready for some of the continent’s and world’s most prestigious debating competitions that are easily accessible to students in Botswana that they haven't been attending.

Competitions such as Jozi Rumble, which was recently hosted at WITS University, the Southern African Debating Championships, to be hosted at the University of Pretoria in July 2025, the African Debate Championships, to be hosted at WITS University in December 2025, and the World Universities Debating Championships, to be hosted in Sofia, Bulgaria also in December 2025.

These tournaments are powerful arenas for cultural exchange, windows into diverse global perspectives and opportunities to develop critical thinking, teamwork, and self-confidence. Students return from them not just better debaters, but more informed, more empathetic and more globally-minded citizens.

As someone who now works in education and routinely evaluates institutions across various performance indicators, I’ve made a striking observation: the most prestigious and forward-thinking institutions globally tend to have strong, thriving debate cultures.

These institutions understand that debate is not just an extracurricular activity, it is a training ground for leadership, innovation, and academic excellence. It sharpens minds, cultivates bold thinkers, and helps shape graduates who are not only employable but influential.

When debate becomes part of an institution’s DNA, it transforms the entire academic environment. It challenges both faculty and students to engage, question and grow, that’s how we create impactful institutions and powerful graduates.

My dream is to see debate culture thrive across campuses in Botswana, building a new generation of articulate, informed, and globally competitive citizens.
