Calculate Array Formulas in a PMS
The first project management software that lets you calculate SQL formulas. Get ready to crunch numbers and uncover insights with Quire.

Picture this: You're looking at your project management software, and you're like, "Wait, do array formulas even belong here?" I mean, we usually think of formulas as those things that just add or subtract numbers, right? Well, hold that thought.

Because here's the deal: when you've got a bunch of tasks in a project, each doing its own thing, you need to be the master of metrics to succeed. That’s where array formulas swoop in to save the day. In this blog post, I'm going to show you how these fancy formulas can jazz up your data game.

How To Scan and Validate Image Uploads in Java
This article discusses the dangers of image file uploads and presents two solutions for virus scanning and validating image files respectively.

Direct image upload processes create a highly efficient path between client-side users and a website’s underlying file storage instances, significantly benefiting both ends of the client/web service relationship. Due largely to the ever-increasing availability (and affordability) of cloud storage resources for independent developer projects and small business ventures, we see the option to upload our own image files more and more frequently everywhere we look online, growing in tandem with steady demand for new forms of social engagement and commerce.

Apple’s latest earnings show the Mac slumping and services soaring

/ Services hit an all-time revenue high (again), and the iPhone 14 lineup is still faring well. But more exciting news awaits Apple fans as WWDC nears in early June.

Apple surpassed Wall Street expectations and said it had reached an all-time high in services revenue and set a new March quarter record for iPhone revenue in a report on its second quarter earnings on Thursday. The numbers show continued demand for the iPhone 14 lineup even as substantial upgrades (including USB-C connectivity) approach this fall. But Apple’s other divisions, including Mac and iPad, were down year over year.

The company’s services business hit (another) all-time high.

Building the World's Most Resilient To-Do List Application With Node.js, K8s, and Distributed SQL
This article demonstrates how you can build cloud-native Node.js applications with Kubernetes (K8s) and distributed SQL.

Developing scalable and reliable applications is a labor of love. A cloud-native system might consist of unit tests, integration tests, build tests, and a full pipeline for building and deploying applications at the click of a button.

A number of intermediary steps might be required to ship a robust product. With distributed and containerized applications flooding the market, so too have container orchestration tools like Kubernetes. Kubernetes allows us to build distributed applications across a cluster of nodes, with fault tolerance, self-healing, and load balancing — plus many other features.

Let’s explore some of these tools by building a distributed to-do list application in Node.js, backed by the YugabyteDB distributed SQL database.

Google announces the Pixel Fold

/ This is Google’s first foldable phone. More details are coming at Google I/O on May 10th.

The rumors are true: next week, Google will introduce its first foldable phone, the Pixel Fold, during the Google I/O 2023 event.

Google hasn’t revealed any specs for the device, but a brief teaser video shows off a full-size outer display on a phone that opens up similarly to Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold devices. The camera bar on the back is similar to other Pixel devices but doesn’t stick out as prominently, reflecting what we’ve seen in leaked marketing materials and even a hands-on video.

We’ll learn a lot more next week.

Motorola is finally bringing a real flagship contender to the US

/ The 2023 Edge Plus checks all the right boxes to go toe-to-toe with Samsung, but you’re probably not going to find it on your wireless carrier’s retail shelves.

We asked, and we received: Motorola is bringing its newest slab-style flagship to the US as the Motorola Edge Plus (2023). It’s priced at $799 for a base model with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, undercutting the $899 Google Pixel 7 Pro and $999 Samsung Galaxy S23 Plus by a significant margin, and it’s equipped with plenty of things you might expect from a flagship Android phone in 2023: a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset, a big, smooth 165Hz screen, a stabilized main camera, a robust IP68 weather resistance rating, and wireless charging.

Weirdly, though, none of the three major US wireless carriers will sell the device — Motorola’s carrier partners for the Edge Plus include Boost Infinite (yep, that one) and Consumer Cellular. It’ll be sold unlocked by Amazon and Best Buy, but given that people in the US tend to get their phones from their carrier, the Edge Plus will be at a disadvantage.

This is shaping up to be an interesting year for Motorola.

Develop a Mobile Multiplayer Game in Minutes With Unity and Oracle Backend for Parse
Learn how to quickly develop cool multiplayer mobile games using Unity and Parse APIs and leave the backend work to Oracle Backend for Parse.

Here, in just a few simple steps, we'll develop a mobile multiplayer game using Unity and Oracle's Backend for Parse.

A Brief Introduction of Unity and Parse Platform
Unity is a cross-platform game engine developed by Unity Technologies, first announced and released in June 2005 at Apple Worldwide Developers Conference as a Mac OS X game engine. The engine has since been gradually extended to support a variety of desktop, mobile, console, and virtual reality platforms. The Parse Platform is a back-end for mobile developers, open-sourced by Facebook/Meta in 2016, that helps to store data in the cloud, manage identity log-ins, handle push notifications, and run custom code in the cloud. Oracle has created an adapter to take advantage of all the features of the Oracle converged database while using Parse APIs.

How Midjourney and Other Diffusion Models Create Images from Random Noise
Diffusion models, such as Midjourney and DALL-E 2 can produce stunning images, but their training always begins with complete noise.

Colossal hype ensues whenever there's progress or even the slightest shift in the world of machine learning (ML). When it comes to AI, the craze always ends up growing out of proportion and insane claims invariably follow. You've probably noticed this recently as more people are beginning to use Midjourney, ChatGPT, Copilot, and so on.

The truth about these systems, however, is always more prosaic. Machine learning is mathematical, and the real implications of the ML models are not nearly as profound as some bloggers would have you believe. They could be beneficial and, in some cases, transform large portions of workflows in specific areas, but only if the user, whether an organization or an individual, has a sufficient understanding of their inner workings, limitations, capabilities, and potential.

This article hopes to shed some light on how diffusion models work, such as the highly popular Midjourney, DALL-E 2, and Stable Diffusion, and particularly how they are trained. This post includes mathematical expressions, but it also describes what each variable represents in an accessible manner.

Learn how diffusion models like Midjourney and DALL-E 2 are trained to produce high-quality images from pure Gaussian noise.

They’re ‘s***ts’ now

/ Paging Lil Jon!

Look. I know that most people aren’t on Bluesky yet, but when you get there, you should know that you won’t be posting. You’ll be s***ting.

I could do some explanation of it being a portmanteau of “sky” + “posting” but I think we just hit the sicko event horizon and a bunch of sh*tposters logged on over the last 24 hours, including a bunch who didn’t bother with Mastodon. Anyway it’s s***ting now. Sorry if you don’t like it. S***t, s***t, mo********er.

Also, it’s not the timeline, it’s the skyline. Dril is there. There’s been a main character incident. Quote tweets are happening but you can’t block anyone and muting doesn’t work. It’s pure PVP and no Elon Musk. Also no DMs, so you’re going to have to be h***y on main.

Did we just hit the sicko event horizon on Bluesky?

My week with Dyson’s absurd wearable air purifier
The Dyson Zone is not the most practical device, but then again, did you really expect that from air-purifying noise-canceling headphones?

was at a hole-in-the-wall pizzeria in downtown Manhattan, debating which slice I wanted to chow down on, when I felt a light tap on my shoulder. I turned, pulling down the metallic visor covering my mouth. In front of me stood the most New York of pizzeria owners. With the visor down, my headphones automatically switched to transparency mode. The sounds of the city flooded back into my ears, and I caught the last part of his question.

I merely adopted the Zone.
