T-Mobile is laying off around 5,000 workers

/ T-Mobile execs promised to add jobs after merging with Sprint, but now, it’s announced another round of layoffs.

T-Mobile is laying off “a little under” 7 percent of its workforce, affecting about 5,000 roles at the company. The move will mostly impact workers in corporate, back-office, and technology roles, with those in retail or customer care positions remaining unaffected.

Other carriers, including AT&T and Verizon, are contending with layoffs, but T-Mobile specifically promised to keep adding jobs following its merger with Sprint in 2020. Despite this commitment, the company laid off hundreds of workers shortly after, while a 2021 report from The Wall Street Journal found that T-Mobile employed 5,000 fewer people at the end of 2020 when compared to before it merged with Sprint.

T-Mobile CEO Mike Sievert blames rising costs.

Google Pixel 7A review: a better deal
It’s $50 more than the Pixel 6A, but some key upgrades keep Google’s A-series at the top of the midrange class.

For the past couple of years, there’s been a very simple flowchart to follow when shopping for a midrange phone: if you want the best screen, get the Samsung phone. If you want the best camera, get the Google Pixel phone. This year, it’s even simpler: get the Google Pixel 7A. If you absolutely must have the best screen in the class, consider the Galaxy A54 5G, but for most people, the 7A is the best choice.

A midrange phone that’s hard to beat.

The Pixel Fold is Google’s $1,800 entry into folding phones
Google is finally giving Samsung some competition in the folding phone space with the Pixel Fold, a device that transforms between a standard smartphone and a small tablet by folding in half.

Following literal years of rumors and leaks, Google has finally announced the Pixel Fold, its first folding device. The $1,799 Fold is set to go head-to-head with Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 4 with preorders starting today, May 10th, and will be shipping to customers in June.

Though this is Google’s first attempt at a folding phone, there’s a lot to like here. As a general gadget or device that you hold and manipulate in your hands, the Pixel Fold is very nice — the hinge is stiff but not cumbersome, the screens look great, and it feels like the expensive object it is. Google’s apps and software appear to work well on it, and it’s likely that any future folding phone features built into Android will be done with the Pixel Fold front of mind.

It’s time for Google to fold ‘em.

Continuous Integration in AWS Using Jenkins Pipelines: Best Practices and Strategies
Learn about implementing CI using Jenkins, a popular automation tool, and how this approach can optimize and streamline your software development process.

Developing and releasing new software versions is an ongoing process that demands careful attention to detail. The ability to monitor and analyze the entire process is critical for identifying any potential issues and implementing effective corrective measures.

The concept of continuous integration becomes relevant at this point.

By adopting a continuous integration approach, software development teams can carefully monitor each stage of the development process and conduct an in-depth analysis of the outcomes. This facilitates the early detection and diagnosis of potential issues, enabling developers to make necessary adjustments and improve the overall development process. In other words, continuous integration provides a systematic way of identifying problems and continuously enhancing software quality, ultimately leading to a better end product.

Google announces the Pixel Fold

/ This is Google’s first foldable phone. More details are coming at Google I/O on May 10th.

The rumors are true: next week, Google will introduce its first foldable phone, the Pixel Fold, during the Google I/O 2023 event.

Google hasn’t revealed any specs for the device, but a brief teaser video shows off a full-size outer display on a phone that opens up similarly to Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold devices. The camera bar on the back is similar to other Pixel devices but doesn’t stick out as prominently, reflecting what we’ve seen in leaked marketing materials and even a hands-on video.

We’ll learn a lot more next week.

Apple’s latest earnings show the Mac slumping and services soaring

/ Services hit an all-time revenue high (again), and the iPhone 14 lineup is still faring well. But more exciting news awaits Apple fans as WWDC nears in early June.

Apple surpassed Wall Street expectations and said it had reached an all-time high in services revenue and set a new March quarter record for iPhone revenue in a report on its second quarter earnings on Thursday. The numbers show continued demand for the iPhone 14 lineup even as substantial upgrades (including USB-C connectivity) approach this fall. But Apple’s other divisions, including Mac and iPad, were down year over year.

The company’s services business hit (another) all-time high.

Building the World's Most Resilient To-Do List Application With Node.js, K8s, and Distributed SQL
This article demonstrates how you can build cloud-native Node.js applications with Kubernetes (K8s) and distributed SQL.

Developing scalable and reliable applications is a labor of love. A cloud-native system might consist of unit tests, integration tests, build tests, and a full pipeline for building and deploying applications at the click of a button.

A number of intermediary steps might be required to ship a robust product. With distributed and containerized applications flooding the market, so too have container orchestration tools like Kubernetes. Kubernetes allows us to build distributed applications across a cluster of nodes, with fault tolerance, self-healing, and load balancing — plus many other features.

Let’s explore some of these tools by building a distributed to-do list application in Node.js, backed by the YugabyteDB distributed SQL database.

This article demonstrates how you can build cloud native Node.js applications with Kubernetes (K8s) and distributed SQL.

The UK’s tortured attempt to remake the internet, explained
The bill aims to make the country ‘the safest place in the world to be online’ but has been mired by multiple delays and criticisms that it’s grown too large and unwieldy to please anyone.

At some point this year, the UK’s long-delayed Online Safety Bill is finally expected to become law. In the government’s words, the legislation is an attempt to make the UK “the safest place in the world to be online” by introducing a range of obligations for how large tech firms should design, operate, and moderate their platforms.

As any self-respecting Verge reader knows, content moderation is never simple. It’s difficult for platforms, difficult for regulators, and difficult for lawmakers crafting the rules in the first place. But even by the standards of internet legislation, the Online Safety Bill has had a rocky passage. It’s been developed over years during a particularly turbulent era in British politics, changing dramatically from year to year. And as an example of just how controversial the bill has become, some of the world’s biggest online organizations, from WhatsApp to Wikipedia, are preemptively refusing to comply with its potential requirements.

It’s been criticized by everyone from WhatsApp to Wikipedia.

Zero Trust Network for Microservices With Istio
Securing microservices networks in the cloud has become challenging. Istio service mesh with Zero Trust Network (ZTN) philosophy offers a solution.

Security was mostly perimeter-based while building monolithic applications. It means securing the network perimeter and access control using firewalls. With the advent of microservices architecture, static and network-based perimeters are no longer effective.

Nowadays, applications are deployed and managed by container orchestration systems like Kubernetes, which are spread across the cloud. Zero trust network (ZTN) is a different approach to secure data across cloud-based networks. In this article, we will explore how Istio, with ZTN philosophy, can help secure microservices.

Understand what zero trust network (ZTN) is and how open-source Istio service mesh enables ZTN for microservices.

Asus ROG Ally hands-on: Windows but tiny
I had a fun time testing this device, but everything’s going to come down to price.

Basically everything written about Asus’ new ROG Ally to date has extensively compared it to the Steam Deck. And that’s very fair.

They are both, after all, handheld gaming machines. They can both run games that you’d generally expect to be running on a PC. If you’re a gamer shopping for a portable device to play Control on your subway commute, the question “should I buy a Steam Deck or wait and buy this Ally thing instead?” seems a very reasonable one to ask.

But I’ve had the chance to try the ROG Ally for a few minutes, and while I can’t yet share my own benchmark results, I am going to say right up front that I don’t think this will be a difficult question to answer. These are very different devices.

Asus may just have something here.
