Apple might be getting into VR at the worst possible time

/ Sales of high-end VR headsets are reportedly low, meaning Apple’s rumored device might be entering a really tough market.

Apple is heavily rumored to reveal its long-awaited mixed reality headset in just a couple of months, but that reveal seems to be arriving at a time when demand for high-end VR is actually quite low.

According to a new blog post from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, some of the biggest recent bets in VR have largely flopped. Kuo reports that:

Sony has cut its 2023 production plan for the PS VR2 by about 20 percent.

The product lifecycle shipment for Meta’s Quest Pro is only around 300,000 units.

Pico (China’s largest AR/VR headset brand) shipments in 2022 were more than 40 percent lower than expected.

It seems to be a tough time to sell high-end headsets

Testing Level Dynamics: Achieving Confidence From Testing
In this article, explore shared experiences to gain insight into how teams have tried to achieve confidence from testing.

All We Can Aim for Is Confidence
Releasing features is all about confidence: confidence that features work as expected; confidence that our work is based on quality code; confidence that our code is easily maintainable and extendable; and confidence that our releases will make happy customers. Development teams develop and test their features to the best of their abilities so that quality releases occur within a timeframe.

The confidence matrix shown below depicts four main areas:

The high confidence and small release time area (an area that all development teams strive for)
The low confidence and small release time area
The high confidence and long release time area
The low confidence and long release time area

How much money do we think Substack lost last year?

/ Because it’s hitting up retail investors for cash.

Substack is desperate, huh? That’s what I understand from their fundraising email, anyway. They’re now hitting up retail investors for millions of dollars after they failed to raise last year.

After certain recent historical events, I have become skeptical of the term “financial inclusion,” a set of buzzwords for making financial services more available to people who are not stratospherically rich. Maybe my cynicism is because Facebook tried to launch a stablecoin for the “unbanked” that you nonetheless needed (at least, according to the now-scrapped plan) a credit card to use. Maybe it is because Robinhood made a big fuss about how many brand-new retail investors it brought onto its gambling platform. Or maybe it’s the proliferation of buy now, pay later services from the likes of Klarna, Afterpay, and Affirm (and now Apple.)

Would be nice to get some numbers so people could make informed investments!

Titmouse’s 5 Second Night animation showcase is back with a vengeance
Animation studio Titmouse’s annual showcase of shortform stories returns this month with a new batch of original cartoons created during artists’ time off.

Fifteen years ago, while working on Metalocalypse and seeing countless pieces of art from the show every day, animation studio Titmouse’s co-founder Shannon Prynoski found herself wondering what kinds of creative ideas her employees were thinking about when they weren’t solely focused on work. As animators themselves, Prynoski and her husband, Chris — Titmouse’s other co-founder — knew firsthand what it felt like to be firing on all cylinders from 9AM to 5PM while still nurturing passion projects that only lived in their heads. They understood how draining shifts between those modes could be.

Titmouse’s annual short animation showcase is coming back.

Framework announces Laptop 16 — and promises ‘holy grail’ of upgradable graphics

/ The Framework Laptop 16 is modular to the extreme.

It’s been four years since Dell promised the Alienware Area-51m would be a truly upgradable gaming laptop — and nearly two years since the company got sued for utterly failing to deliver that dream.

Now, Framework, the sole company in modern memory* with an actual track record of delivering a fully upgradable laptop, is taking a stab at it, too.

The secret: a removable butt.

Microsoft’s new Copilot will change Office documents forever
Copilot is more than just a chatbot. Microsoft is gradually building an AI assistant that it has dreamed about for years.

Microsoft’s new AI-powered Copilot summarized my meeting instantly yesterday (the meeting was with Microsoft to discuss Copilot, of course) before listing out the questions I’d asked just seconds before. I’ve watched Microsoft demo the future of work for years with concepts about virtual assistants, but Copilot is the closest thing I’ve ever seen to them coming true.

Microsoft is in an AI race with Google for the future of work.

The Internet Archive is defending its digital library in court today

/ A potentially landmark copyright lawsuit could affect how libraries are able to scan their own book collections.

Book publishers and the Internet Archive will face off today in a hearing that could determine the future of library ebooks — deciding whether libraries must rely on the often temporary digital licenses that publishers offer or whether they can scan and lend copies of their own tomes.

You can listen in via teleconference.

Text-to-video AI inches closer as startup Runway announces new model

/ Text-to-video is the next frontier for generative AI, though current output is rudimentary. Runway says it’ll be making its new generative video model, Gen-2, available to users in ‘the coming weeks.’

Text-to-image AI is mainstream now, but just waiting in the wings is text-to-video. The pitch for this technology is that you’ll be able to type a description and generate a corresponding video in any style you like. Current capabilities lag behind this dream, but for those tracking the tech’s progress, an announcement today by AI startup Runway of a new AI video generation model is noteworthy nonetheless.

Text-to-video AI is rudimentary but improving fast.
