Why are so many tech companies laying people off right now?
Didn’t they just have record-breaking profits?

There’s an eerie similarity to the statements tech companies have made about their recent layoffs. Mainly, if the press releases are to be believed, the C-suite of every Big Tech company on Earth — well, with the notable exception of Apple, which has not announced layoffs — figured no one would ever go outside or spend money offline again after the pandemic and their various online businesses would stay just as big as they were during the heights of covid.

All of these statements sound suspiciously similar.

The Meta Quest Pro is $400 off this week

/ It’s still pricey, but it could shore up Meta’s presence in the professional VR market.

Meta has given its professional Meta Quest Pro headset a temporary $400 discount, bringing its cost down to $1,099 in the US. The deal, which, according to CNET, runs for one week in the US and two weeks in the UK at a price of £1,299, at least temporarily mitigates one major point of criticism for the high-end headset.

It now costs as much as HTC’s Vive XR Elite.

Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony are reportedly all skipping E3 2023

/ The Xbox, PlayStation, and Switch vendors may not attend the show.

Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft are all skipping the revitalized E3 convention in June, according to a new report from IGN. E3 will be back as an in-person conference in Los Angeles after not happening at all in 2022, and I personally was hopeful that the big three console makers would be at the show when it takes place from June 13th through 16th to help make it feel like the big event of years past. But according to IGN’s reporting, that’s not the case.

Xbox, PlayStation, and Switch vendors may not attend.

Winnebago kicks off eVanlife with the all-electric eRV2

/ The fully operational prototype built on the Ford E-Transit platform is now in its final stage of field testing.

Winnebago’s name is synonymous with vanlife, which makes its new all-electric eRV2 notable for an industry built on top of diesel engines. It’s just a prototype, but this one is fully operational and actually on the road with a fleet of customers for six months of field testing. Input from those early experiences will ultimately inform the eRV’s final design and help kick off an era of in the process.

amsung Galaxy S23 teasers hint at high resolution cameras and improved low-light photography

/ A pair of videos posted by Samsung China hint at the improvements coming on February 1st.

Samsung’s upgrades for this year’s Galaxy S23 lineup include higher-resolution camera sensors and improved low light photography, according to a pair of teaser trailers posted by Samsung China. The new phones are expected to be officially announced in three weeks on February 1st at Samsung’s first in-person smartphone event since the start of the pandemic.

Apple’s next custom hardware trick might be its own MicroLED screens

/ Making the switch could pull Apple away from its current reliance on OLED displays made by Samsung, LG, and others.

Apple is reportedly working on designing its own in-house MicroLED displays to use in devices like the iPhone and Apple Watch, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. The report says that the screens could start showing up on devices as early as next year, following almost five years of planning and development.

This shift away from OLED has been in the works for a while
