Thank you so much to everyone who attended the workshop last Friday!

Here’s the biggest takeaway that I didn’t mention in the video. I call it “The Most Important Thing”: If you’re a small business owner, especially one who is hesitant to put yourself or your business out there, remember that what you have IS special. You wouldn’t have made it this far if you didn’t believe in yourself or that what you have to offer the world is something that will genuinely make other peoples’ lives better. You are NOT a Silicon Valley tech bro or a Wall Street hedge fund manager scamming people out of their money. You are the heart and soul of your neighbourhood and your community. A lot of us were taught that putting ourselves out there is selfish. It’s not. There are so many people who are absolutely CRAVING the product or the service that you offer. Don’t be selfish. Don’t keep it to yourself.

That said! It ain’t easy. Putting yourself out there is a hard road. But take it slow. Take it one step at a time. And if you’re struggling to figure out what that next step is? Phone a friend. Do some Googling. Watch a YouTube video. Look up resources in your area. And if you’re still not sure?? Hey! Call someone like me! I’m not even saying it has to be me! There are plenty of other pros out there who LOVE supporting small business owners. But don’t hide that beautiful thing you got going on! Share it with us!

I also want to say that I’m immensely grateful to the folks who supported me as I made it happen. Jay at for his support and advice. Treehouse Village Ecohousing for the venue. The small business community on the South Shore for helping to get the word out and for showing up! And at Sunflower Catering in Bridgewater for some delicious and allergy-friendly sandwiches, wraps and salad.

I know there's plenty of you out there who think "Branding" is a four letter word. You have a small business and you want it to reflect who you are, and you--and your company!--are most DEFINITELY not some over-polished corporation shining with chrome and silicon.

That DOESN'T mean that your company doesn't have a brand! A brand is so much more than a logo, and it's so much more than posting every day. A brand is a voice, it's a story, it's a PLAN. And plans are templates that help us feel more comfortable and more confident in ourselves.

When we are able to tone down the anxiety that comes with the unknown, we can focus more of our energy on the parts of our business that we LOVE. And we all know that small business owners have enough anxiety from all the unknowns as it is!

Come join me for this FREE lunch and learn where we'll talk about what "good" branding is, the difference between a "brand" and a "company," and why consistency matters. Every attendee will get a free follow up Brand Audit and a 1:1 consultation on where your brand's biggest needs are.

I'll be talking to South Shore small business owners at 39 Treehouse Lane in Bridgewater on Friday, February 13th from 12pm - 1pm!

On Nova Scotia’s South Shore, I see a lot of small businesses that operate with a page and Google Business Profile as the only way to reach them online.

Sure, there’s ways to use those Facebook and Google profiles to get basic information about your small business out there—hours, location, maybe a phone number for reservations or bookings. But Facebook, especially, is not always easy to navigate.

When your small business marketing strategy doesn’t include a website—even a basic one—it causes 5 major problems.

1) It’s not always easy to find information about your business or how to get in touch. This can also make a customer’s experience of your business an unpleasant one.

2) You’re missing a chance to tell your business’ story and engage potential customers.

3) Customers will wonder, “If they don’t care about their image, will they care about me, as a customer?” I’m sure that you’re very welcoming in person. But this is your first opportunity to show hospitality to your potential customers!

4) You lose an important opportunity to convert people who are interested in your business into paying customers. Web sales, e-commerce, online booking, lead forms, lead magnets—hosting any of these on your website allows you to collect email addresses from customers and potential customers. Email marketing has a 35:1 ROI. Do you want to miss out on that?

5) You lose an important opportunity to collect demographic data about your website visitors that you could use to re-target them or people like them. If your website has first-party cookies, you can collect fantastic data that allows you to create super targeted Google, Facebook and Instagram ads that convert.

Of course, there’s a cost in both time and energy to creating a website for a small business. But I recommend the best tool to start with for small business owners, like myself, who don’t really know how to code. It only costs about $220-$250 a year. I guarantee that subscription will pay for itself over the course of the year.

Are you scared of the "digital marketing" boogie monster?

I find that a lot of small business owners in Nova Scotia, especially on the South Shore in Bridgewater, Lunenburg and Mahone Bay, get a little spooked when I bring up "digital marketing".

I have a lot of theories about why some people think of marketing as a dirty word.

One has to do with confidence and self-worth. If you don't feel confident in yourself, you might not feel that you're worthy of people's attention. You might not feel that your small business is worthy of people's attention. But you and your small business ARE worthy of people's attention. You have a product or service that's worth selling and worth sharing with the world. Let us have it!

The other one has to do with perfectionism and a fear of failure. We have these ideas some times that the world is a perfect meritocracy, and that if we "do our best" people will find us. But that's just not true a lot of the time. At minimum, we need to let the world know that we're out here. We can't worry about having the perfect campaign. We just have to start somewhere. It's hard. I'm in it with you, too. Remember: "Don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good!"

You got this! Don't let the "digital marketing" boogie monster keep you up at night.

The third clip from episode 1 of Social Media! Check it out here!

It's here!

Scotial Media Episode 1 with Adam Mack is finally live on YouTube! Check it out here: https://youtu.be/VOG590R33Us

Here's a clip of Adam explaining how much time he spends on social media marketing every day. Why does he put so much into social media marketing, though? It gives him back the most.... The most data, so that you can learn and adapt your practices.

If you're a owner interested in -- whether that's , , , ads, or -- Scotial Media is for you!

Scotial Media is a new marketing hosted by Two Bridges Digital Marketing, where I interview Nova Scotia small business owners about their digital marketing successes and tips.

In episode 1, I talk to Adam Mack of . I first saw Adam's work at Halifax Craft Market, and again at . His wood sculptures are incredibly detailed and life-like.

They show an immense amount of skill and talent, and they're absolutely beautiful. But a lot of artists and vendors have tons of skill.

One of the things that sets Adam apart, aside from his impressive skills, is that he's been able to make a living selling his art. He has over 22,000 followers on Instagram and over 27,000 on Tiktok.

Adam was so, so generous with his time and energy. I had both a camera snafu AND a scheduling snafu on the morning of our interview, and he rolled with the punches. That same generosity comes through in the interview. He offers some great advice and insights for how YOU can follow in his footsteps.

The big takeaways? Be authentic in your social media presence, make your business' social media a regular part of your routine, use social media data to your advantage, and don't be afraid to fail.

Watch the video to hear more about Adam's takes!

This clip focuses on . It's important for any , and especially in , to be sure that our social media is coming from an authentic place. You don't just want to grow your audience. You want the RIGHT audience!

How can you create targeted, local content that will appeal to the customers in your own backyard?

The full interview is coming up on Thursday, Oct. 24th in honor of

Here's 's biggest tip for owners!

"Don't be afraid to fail.... "

Dang. I'm sure we've all heard something like this before. But I think it's such a succinct summary of the concept.

And a useful reminder for all of us dealing with imposter syndrome (like yours truly 😆 ).

When he was coming back from an injury, I think I heard Jaylen Brown of the Celtics ( ) say something along the lines of "Good minutes make good hours make good days make good weeks make good months make good years."

For me, that's a really important thought. I've long been susceptible to impatience. I'd say it's probably my biggest flaw. So I tend to get impatient when my projects aren't succeeding immediately.

Focusing on building good habits has been a huge part of my process.

Anyway.... I hope you enjoy this clip from my first Scotial Media interview! It's a new webseries I'm launching on YouTube on October 24th to celebrate . I interview Nova Scotia small business owners and entrepreneurs offering their tips for successful digital marketing. Follow me on YouTube for the full 23 minute interview!

(I had a camera snafu, so this is all on my phone's selfie setting! Hahah! Sorry for the poor video quality and composition!
