Did you know that 80% of job positions in Calgary are filled through networking and only 20% through online applications? Did you know that the average period for landing a successful job in Calgary is 90 days? All these and much more insights were provided in MentorUp Calgary’s another exciting event titled “Be the Project Manager of Your Job Search” on Wednesday, May 06, at Innovate Calgary. Debbie Mastel, critical talent specialist at Devon Energy and an experienced speaker on career planning gave great insights on how to find a job within 90 days in the current economic times.
The presentation was well received by a crowd of 35 attendees who were excited and attentive while Debbie rolled out the plan for a successful job hunt which could be summarized in the following four steps:
1. Research – Compile an exhaustive list of people with hiring authority and network with them
2. Hit Ratio – Evaluate your job hunt process through important ratios. Examples could include number of LinkedIn requests sent vs. requests accepted, number of jobs applied for vs. pre-screening calls received, etc. If the hit ratio falls below 10%, job seekers should seek professional advice for improvements
3. Pre-Screen – Used by recruiters to examine a candidate’s communication skills, job seekers should prepare themselves for a pleasant and professional conversation on the phone for higher chances of interviews
4. Interview – Last but not the least, if the ratio of interviews attended vs. offers received exceeds 2, job seekers should seek professional advice on how to be more effective

The talk was followed by great networking and refreshments.
