The word utilize doesn’t make you sound more intelligent. It does make you sound ponderous and pretentious.

Just say use.
It’s clear. It’s concise.
It says more with less — the goal of sharp communication.

What is Proofreading?

“Proofreading (also known as verification editing) is checking a work after editing to ensure it’s ready for publishing; it is NOT a substitute for editing. The proofreader reads page proofs after edited copy comes back from the typesetter or desktop designer and fixes incontestable errors of spelling, punctuation, and grammar that have slipped through the net during copyediting, and queries inconsistencies.

When the proofreader’s client base extends beyond the publishing industry, they are often asked to edit raw text. This is where it goes beyond proofreading into proofediting or straight up editing.

How far any editor is prepared to step outside of traditional publishing-industry definitions of proofreading will depend on preferences, skills, experience, and level of confidence.”
