One of my favourite ways to talk about branding with clients is to forget about the logo, colours and fonts for a second.

Imagine your brand walks into a room full of other brands. What are they wearing? Are they polished and put-together, or relaxed? Are they the one making everyone laugh, quietly observing from the corner, or introducing themselves to everyone they meet? What do they sound like? What do they care about? And most importantly, how do they make people feel?

Because your brand has a personality, whether you’ve intentionally created one or not.

Your visuals, messaging, website and overall customer experience are all telling people something about who you are.

That’s why branding isn’t just about making your business look good. It’s about making sure the way your business looks, sounds and feels actually reflects who you are and the experience you want to create for your customers.

When I work with clients, this is where we start. Before we get into colours and typography, we figure out who your brand is.

Because when your brand has a clear personality, the design decisions become a whole lot easier.

So, if your brand walked into a room full of other brands... would you recognize them?

I think we should all channel our inner Dolly Parton and lean into what makes us unique. Think of your favourite chocolate bar, clothing store or coffee shop. Not all of them look the same or feel the same as every other brand. There is something about those brands that drew you in that might not necessarily be something that would appeal to your mom, friend, or enemy 👀.

I think a lot of business owners put pressure on themselves to create a brand that everyone will like. So they choose a safe colour, a familiar font and their messaging that doesn’t risk saying too much. While the end result might look good, it could end up feeling a little forgettable. Or not resonating with the people you actually want to work with that understand what you do and connect with your approach.

The goal should be attracting your people to think “yep, this is exactly what I’ve been looking for.” That’s the difference between designing a brand that’s simply liked and designing one to be remembered.

A little personality, perspective and you goes a long way.

Not every design direction makes it to the finish line, but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t an important part of getting there.

For Gold Heron, the challenge was finding a visual language that could hold two sides of the brand at once: the confidence and credibility needed for intellectual property law, with enough warmth and approachability for the creators and businesses behind the work being protected.

This concept explored that balance through a more editorial direction. Deep navy created a sense of trust and authority, while the warm gold added distinction. The refined serif typography brought in the sophistication of the legal world, without making the brand feel dated or overly corporate.

At the centre was a heron.

A watchful, elegant symbol that felt connected to the idea of vigilance and protection. It was designed to suggest that quiet, always-present sense of someone keeping an eye out for what matters.

Because that was really at the heart of Gold Heron’s story: protecting creative work shouldn’t feel complicated, inaccessible, or like a black box. The brand needed to communicate clarity, confidence and reassurance. Helping lawyers and creators feel like they’re finally working with the right tools, and with someone in their corner.

This wasn’t the direction that was ultimately chosen, but I still love the thinking behind it. Sometimes exploring the wrong direction helps reveal exactly what the right one needs to say.

Before I start designing anything, I need to understand what I’m designing for.

So the first step is usually a conversation about your business. Where you’re at, where you’re trying to go, who you’re trying to reach and what isn’t working right now.

From there, we can start figuring out what the brand or website actually needs to do.

Because jumping straight into colours, fonts and logo design without understanding the bigger picture usually means we’re just making something the looks good without knowing if it’s doing its job.

The design comes after the thinking.

And when strategy meets design it can be truly rewarding to see how everything just clicks.

There are a few things I will stand by as a designer until the end.

Good design isn’t about following every trend, adding more, or making something look “fancy.” It’s about making thoughtful choices that actually make sense for the business, the people you’re trying to reach, and where they want to go.

A peek behind the brand identity design work for Untrap.

When I first started working with Untrap, I didn’t want to jump straight into designing a logo.

I wanted to understand the business first.

What exactly does Untrap do? Who are they trying to reach? What do they want people to understand about them when they first come across the brand?

Once I had a better understanding of that, we started talking about how we wanted the brand to feel. We landed on a few key words that became the foundation for the creative direction.

From there, I started pulling together imagery, typography, colours and visual references to create a moodboard. It was a way of taking all of those words and ideas and starting to see them come to life.

Then came the part that you don't always see in the final project: the iterations.

Trying things. Realizing something wasn't quite right. Pushing an idea further. Going back to what we had established at the beginning and asking, does this actually feel like Untrap?

Eventually, we landed on an identity that felt like a reflection of the business, rather than something that was simply designed to look good.

This is really where I’ve been wanting to take my work more intentionally. Design that starts with understanding the business and uses strategy to guide the creative.

Because the best brands aren’t just designed. They’re thought through.

When your business has grown but your brand hasn't, there's a cost to standing still.

Maybe it's the client who clicked away because your website didn't build confidence.

Maybe it's the inquiry that never came because your messaging wasn't clear.

Maybe it's the premium pricing you hesitate to charge because your brand doesn't reflect the quality of your work.

Your brand doesn't need to be perfect.

But it should support where your business is today and not where it was three years ago.

Curiosity got the best of me! I had to hop on this trend to see what Claude AI would come up using the same brief 👀

The result? It came back with a generic direction, simpler visual elements and less emphasis on distinct brand personality.

Such a great reminder that AI can be a helpful starting point, but thoughtful strategy and creative direction are really what shape a brand into something memorable + scalable.
