Growing up, I used to help my Dad peel vinyl in the back room of our basement. He would show me what he was working on, and explain the importance of choosing colours and fonts that stand out from far away, so that people could read the message really well. I could sense his passion as he explained, and from those early moments, my own passion bloomed.
He went to college before graphic design programs existed, when the programs were geared towards sign painting and writing. He ran his own business and would hand paint large advertisements on windows for businesses in the local area. As the industry evolved and turned to vinyl applications, he pivoted to vinyl signage.
I love how he would involve me in the process. Show me what he was working on and include me in his world. It’s inspired me to always do the same with my children. Show them projects, get their thoughts on colours and design ideas. Help me drop off business cards to local businesses.
And when I have a cool design project I’m working on, he’s always the one I’m most excited to show.
Thanks for inspiring me Dad, design will always be our thing. 🤍
